In brief
Boathouse gets go ahead
Planning permission for the development and expansion of the College
boathouse at Putney was given the go ahead at the second hearing
of the local borough planning committee on 1 July. The amended
proposal, prepared by the Estates Division and architects Troughton
McAslan, was approved by a 12:2 majority.
Elected fellow
Stephen Richardson, professor of chemical engineering, Department
of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, has been elected
to fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has made
major contributions to fundamental and engineering fluid mechanics,
to polymer processing system development and to offshore safety.
He has solved many engineering problems involving complex fluids
(particularly in the polymers area) and has been extensively involved
in offshore safety, being a key witness at the Piper Alpha inquiry.
He has a unique ability to apply fundamental and deep physical
principles to the solution of engineering problems.
Beit fire
Smoke and heat damage was caused to the laboratory of Professor
Mustafa Djamgoz after overheating fridges caused a fire in the
Department of Biology during the early hours of Monday morning.
Fortunately smoke detectors raised the alarm and prevented the
fire spreading.
RPMS dean
Nick Wright, professor of histopathology at the Royal Postgraduate
Medical School, has been appointed dean of the School from 1 October,
on the retirement of Sir Colin Dollery. Nick Wright holds the
position of vice principal (research) at the Imperial College
School of Medicine.
Honorary degree
Emeritus Professor Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, Department of Chemistry,
has received a honorary degree from the University of Oxford.
DSc (Eng)
Dr Michael Lockett has been awarded a DSc (Eng) of the University
of London for work in the field of distillation.
