'business' letters scam (16 September 1997), incidences
of the fraudulent fax/telex invoice scam have occurred. A
company submits what appears to be an invoice for payment
in respect of a directory entry for the College,
department or centre etc. implying that an order has been
placed by the recipient and a corresponding fee
(typically £350-£400) is due and payable. On closer
inspection the narrative on the reverse states 'By
signing the order form or paying the amount mentioned on
the front page the offer becomes an order'. The
directories are not high profile and the entries are
expensive. Members of College should therefore be aware
of any such invoices received - usually from an off-shore
or PO Box address such as Switzerland, thus avoiding
recourse to UK law for recovery purposes. Small-bore MR scanner The magnetic resonance scanner in the Department of
Chemistry has undergone an extensive renovation. The new
scanner is able to scan faster and with higher
resolution. Renovation of the scanner was made possible
through the generous donation of equipment and labour by
the Medical Systems and Research & Development of the
General Electrical Company (USA). For further information
and use of the scanner contact Colin Caro on 0171-594
5180, email c.caro@ic.ac.uk;
or Denis Doorly on 0171-594 5049, email d.doorly@ic.ac.uk. |
