11th Cherry lecture

The 1998 Cherry memorial lecture, ‘Child power: key to the new learning of the digital century’, which takes place on 2 June, is by Professor Seymour Papert, internationally renowned educational philosopher and mathematician. For details see http://www.ee.ic.ac.uk/cherryinfo/

Tutor appointed

Dr Anna Thomas-Betts, senior lecturer in geophysics, T.H. Huxley School, has been appointed college tutor for the period 1 April 1998 to 31 July 2001.

Ecological numbers

Professor John Lawton has been awarded the distinguished statistical ecologist award for 1998, to be presented at the International Congress of Ecology Statistical Ecology Program inaugural session on 20 July. The award recognises outstanding contributions to the development of basic concepts and applications of statistical ecology.

Barcelona bound

A top prize of £300 went to PhD student, Susie Kablean, Department of Chemistry, for her presentation at the ninth organic chemistry poster symposium held in London by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Susie Kablean, who used the cash prize for a trip to Barcelona, gave a presentation on stereoselective synthesis of 1,2,4 triols via a silicon tethered C-H insertion reaction.

Moving on

The Council of Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, has appointed Professor Adrian Smith as principal of the College with effect from 1 September 1998. An expert on statistics and applications of probability, Professor Smith has worked at Imperial since 1990. He is currently head of the Department of Mathematics.

Longer lasting snack

The QT snack bar, Sherfield building, South Kensington, is extending its opening hours. Commencing Monday 27 April it will open from 08.45 to 17.00.
