DEPARTMENTS

  • As part of the reorganisation of the academic structure there are revisions to some department names and membership as follows:
  • The former Department of Biological and Medical Systems has been renamed the Department of Bioengineering in the Faculty of Engineering as from 18 April 2001.
  • The current departments of Biochemistry and Biology, the Centre for Structural Biology and the Biophysics Group in the Department of Physics will come together to form the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences as from 1 August 2001.
  • Part of the TH Huxley School of Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering will become the Department of Earth Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering as from 1 August 2001.
  • Part of the TH Huxley School of Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering will become the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Life Sciences as from 1 August 2001.

    HEADS OF DEPARTMENT
    Professor M Buck, Professor of Molecular Microbiology in the Department of Biology, has been appointed Head of the Department of Biology and Biochemistry in the Faculty of Life Sciences for a period of five years with effect from 1 August 2001 in succession to Professor M Hassell who takes up his appointment as Principal of the Faculty of Life Sciences on that date.
    Professor SM Richardson, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, has been appointed Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology in the Faculty of Engineering for a period of five years with effect from 1 August 2001 in succession to Professor J Perkins who takes up his appointment as Principal of the Faculty of Physical Sciences on that date.
    Professor C Toumazou, Professor of Analog Circuit Design in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has been appointed Head of the Department of Bioengineering in the Faculty of Engineering with effect from 18 April 2001 to 31 July 2004 in succession to Professor R Kitney.
    Professor JK Waage, at present Chief Executive of CABI Bioscience, has been appointed to the Chair of Applied Ecology and as Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences for a period of five years with effect from 1 August 2001.
    Professor MR Warner, Professor of Geophysics in the TH Huxley School for Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering, as Head of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering for a period of five years with effect from 1 August 2001.

    PRO RECTOR (ADMISSIONS)
    Professor TJH Clark has been appointed Pro Rector (Admissions) with effect from 1 August 2001 until 31 July 2002. This follows his completed term as Provost at the Wye campus.

    PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENTS
    Professor DJ Balding, currently Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Reading, has been appointed to the Chair of Statistical Genetics in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health Sciences at the St Mary's campus with effect from 1 September 2001.
    Professor SH Muggleton, currently Professor of Machine Learning and Head of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Group in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York, has been appointed to the Chair of Bioinformatics in the Department of Computing with effect from 1 July 2001.
    Professor JA Plant, formerly Chief Scientist at NERC has accepted appointment to the Chair in Applied Geochemistry in the T H Huxley School of Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering with effect from 12 February 2001.
    Professor JA Sefton, formerly Research Fellow at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and Quantitative Research Analyst at UBS Warburg, has accepted appointment to the Chair in Economics in the Management School with effect from 1 March 2001.
    Professor C Svanborg, currently Professor of Clinical Immunology at the Institute of Laboratory Medicine at Lund University, Sweden, has accepted appointment to the Chair in Experimental Microbiology in the Division of Medicine with effect from 1 March 2001.

    VISITING PROFESSORS
    Dr G Giampieri has accepted an association as Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics from 15 February 2001 until 14 February 2002.
    Dr P Hardisty has accepted an association as Visiting Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1 March 2001 until 31 December 2002.
    Dr C Harris, has accepted an association as Visiting Professor in the TH Huxley School of Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering from 1 March 2001 until 28 February 2003.

    RETIREMENTS Mr JJ Aldworth, Electrician in the Estates Division at the Wye campus, with effect from 30 April 2001, after 14 years' service.
    Mrs MC Arnold, Administrator in the TH Huxley School of Environment, Earth Science and Engineering, with effect from 28 February 2001, after more than 12 years' service.
    Mrs DC Daly, Flower Arranger in Residences at the Wye campus, with effect from 13 April 2001, after 12 years' service.
    Mr DG Dean, Superintendent of Works in the Estates Division at Silwood Park, with effect from 30 April 2001, after nearly 14 years' service.
    Mr CJ Fowler, Technician in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with effect from 1 February 2001, after more than 14 years' service.
    Mr GW Fox, Cleaner/Foreperson in the Department of Biology at Silwood Park, with effect from 2 February 2001, after more than six years' service.
    Mr S Gencay, Day Security Officer, in the Security Division, with effect from 30 April 2001, after more than 18 years' service.
    Mrs M Izquierdo, Cleaner in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with effect from 22 March 2001, after more than 10 years' service.
    Mrs SA Jones, Secretary in the Divison of Surgery, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care, with effect from 28 February 2001, after 21 years' service.

    Dr BM Southcott, Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Division of Surgery, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care, with effect from 16 April 2001 after nearly 25 years' service.
    Mrs PA Taylor, Secretary in the Division of Investigative Sciences at the Charing Cross campus, with effect from 17 March 2001, after more than 13 years' service.
    Mrs RM Thompson, Cleaning Supervisor in the Estates Division at the Charing Cross campus, with effect from 31 March 2001, after more than six years' service.

    OBITUARIES
    Mr RG Howlett formerly Assistant Foreman (Buildings) in the Estates Division died on 8 May 2001. He retired on 27 June 1986.
    Mr JE Amos formerly Head Porter at Wye College died on 11 May 2001. He retired on 31 December 1986.
    Mr AE Savage formerly Financial Secretary in the Finance Division died on 2 April 2001. He retired in 1969.
    Professor N Baker formerly Professor in the Department of Mathematics died on 20 May 2001. He retired on 30 September 1997.
