Woodward Buildings, located in North Acton, is Imperial’s newest hall of residence complex. Rising to 19 storeys, the flagship new development forms a contemporary student village with cluster style apartments and generous communal space for students to enjoy.
Woodward Buildings is named after Professor Joan Woodward, a leading academic in Organisation Theory and the second woman to ever receive a chair at Imperial College. Woodward was a pioneer for empirical research in organisational structures and analytical frameworks that establish the link between technology and production systems.
As the local area is rapidly developing with a number of new buildings currently being constructed (including Imperial's new Kemp Porter Buildings), there may be times when nearby construction sites can be slightly noisy.
Please note that some of the rooms and kitchens in Woodward Buildings overlook the Acton Cemetery.

Woodward Buildings has some areas of cladding made from an Aluminium Composite Material (ACM). The building has been declared safe for occupancy, but we will be replacing the cladding on parts of the building to ensure the highest standards of fire safety. We are currently finalising the design, scope and specification of these works with the replacement scheduled for early next year, or sooner subject to obtaining the necessary planning and building regulation approvals.
The following fire safety strategy is in place at Woodward to protect occupants in the event of fire:
- Sprinklers in each bedroom, hallway and communal kitchen, which are automatically activated when fire is detected.
- Automatic fire detection in each bedroom and throughout the building as a whole.
- Fire alarms that have backup power supplies and are maintained by specialist engineers.
- Manual alarm buttons in every lobby of the accommodation floors – these can be triggered by anyone who may discover an outbreak of fire before it is automatically detected. They can also be used by staff or the fire service to escalate evacuation if required.
- Staff on-site 24/7 who are trained in how to respond in the event of fire alarm activation.
- Fire drills carried out to check that our fire evacuation processes are effective.
- Regular checks and audits of the building carried out, working closely with the London Fire Brigade.
