1. Pull the plug! – Don’t leave chargers plugged into the wall unnecessarily – they’re still using energy even though you’re not using them.
  2. Fill your cup, not your kettle – overfilling the kettle for a week uses enough energy to power a TV for a whole day.
  3. Compare and switch - make sure you’re not paying more than you need to for your energy. There are loads of price comparison websites that can help you find the cheapest energy deal.
  4. Use energy saving light bulbs - They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around £78 over the lifetime of the bulb.
  5. Close the curtains and keep doors shut ... and keep the heat where you want it!
  6. Put a lid on it – using a lid on a saucepan reduces the amount of energy used for cooking by 90% and gets the job done faster.
  7. Fill up the washing machine (and turn it down to 30 degrees) - one full load uses much less energy than two half loads – the same goes for dishwashers andtumble dryers.
  8. Don’t leave appliances on standby - £900 million of energy is wasted every year in the UK through appliances left on standby. Invest in a ‘power down’ plug and it’ll do all the hard work for you!
  9. Switch it off! – always turn off lights when you leave the room.

  1. Exploit the oven – leave the oven door open to let the heat warm up the kitchen after cooking, and cook with your housemates – using the oven once instead of four times saves energy and will probably result in something more delicious and substantially more nutritious than a Pot Noodle.
  2. Timing is everything – there’s no point putting the heating on when you wake up and then leaving the house just as its beginning to warm up – set the heating to come on before you wake up to avoid wasting energy.
  3. Turn your thermostat down to 18 degrees instead of the usual 21 degrees – you could save 10% on energy bills for every degree you lower the temperature.
  4. Put a layer on, not the heating! Each layer you put on adds 3 degrees to the warmth of your body.
  5. Exercise – nothing like a good bit of space hopper action to get the blood flowing.
  6. Close the curtains and keep doors shut ... and keep the heat where you want it!
  7. Cut out drafts – invest in a draft snake to stop that breeze under your door (a rolled-up towel will do the same job).
  8. Snuggle up – fill up a hot water bottle and turn your duvet into a portable heater.
  9. Bleed your radiators – if they need it they’ll be hotter at the bottom than the top.

  1. Water saving devices – Every time a toilet is flushed water saving devices save you up to 3 litres of water and help reduce your carbon footprint. Some water companies offer free money saving devices – check out your water provider’s website.
  2. Don’t leave taps dripping– a dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're turned off.
  3. Time yourself in the shower – A quick 5-minute shower uses around 20-30 gallons less water than a bath.
  4. Turn your water thermostat down to 60 degrees.
  5. Don’t leave the tap running when you’re brushing your teeth – 6 litres of water are wasted for every minute that the tap is left running.
