Following the success of the Industry xChange retreats held earlier in 2019, the Graduate School are pleased to announce the launch of the Imperial Grand Challenges retreats. 


The retreats offer EPSRC-funded* doctoral students the opportunity to participate in enhanced professional development through interaction with industry. The 3 day non-residential retreats are themed according to the government’s Industrial Strategy challenges
.  Retreat participants will be involved in a range of practical activities aimed at networking and knowledge exchange, creating impact in industry from research, working on innovation and idea generation and receiving advice and developmental support through observations and feedback.

The core component of the Grand Challenges retreat is connecting doctoral student talent to industry representatives in order to understand key trends in the sectors, the skills that industry are looking for and how to transform academic ideas into real business innovation. 

On completion of this programme, students will be better able to:

  • Recognise impact and create pathways to impact in industry
  • Identify and participate in impact activities for their research and industry challenges
  • Assess industry requirements and use appropriate communication strategies
  • Employ innovation / entrepreneurial skills and attributes
  • Self-assess and develop successful communication skills for innovation, ideas and influence

Further Information

Course & Industry attending

Students should be willing to engage with industry representatives and have an interest in key trends in the sector, developing their professional skills and competencies to work collaboratively with industry. Participants will work in small groups and where appropriate, an industry representative. 

The three days will consist of:

  • Coaching sessions 
  • Representatives from industry
  • Pitching research ideas
  • A wealth of networking opportunities 
  • Meeting alumni 

Day 1

The first day is designed to help students communicate their research to an industrial audience and think more innovatively.  

Day 2

The second day is designed to be more practical where students begin to put their innovative thinking to the test.

Day 3

The third day is the conclusion of the challenge task and where students present their solutions to the challenge panel for feedback.

Eligibility

Imperial College participants must:

  • Be a current EPSRC-funded doctoral student *
  • Ideally be in the second year of doctoral study (i.e., MRes year + 2)

    *Some President's PhD Scholarship-funded students may be eligible due to the make-up of this funding. Please indicate this on the booking form.

Important information

  • This course is NON-RESIDENTIAL
  • The course will take place on 12 - 14 November 2019 at The Trampery, Old Street and the Hilton Olympia, London.

Travel Expenses - How to claim

It is expected that you should complete your journey via the cheapest route. The Graduate School will reimburse all reasonable travel expenses to and from the venue up to a maximum of £50. We estimate that this limit will amply cover travel around the Greater London area. An expenses claim form along with receipts will need to be provided to the Graduate School.  Expense claims must be submitted and received within 28 days and no later than Tuesday 10 December 2019.  Full instructions on completing and submitting the expense claim will be sent to all participants after confirmation of booking.
