Overview

Our degrees in Patient Safety are designed for healthcare professionals, both medical and managerial, to provide a basis for the fundamentals of patient safety pratices.

This course is made up of three progressional levels (PG Cert, PG Dip and MSc), and you must apply to the PG Cert in the first instance. Read more about how this works under 'Choosing your course' in the admissions section.

Having successfully completed the PG Cert, you can return in later years to complete either the PG Diploma or MSc as long as the PG Diploma is completed within four years of registering for the PG Certificate and the MSc is completed within five years of registering for the PG Certificate.

  • The Postgraduate Certificate focuses on quality improvement, how health systems and policies relate to safety, social impact and human factors.
  • The Postgraduate Diploma expands on these by including how to introduce innovation into healthcare, safety systems, decision making and leadership.
  • The MSc takes this further still with the development of a research project based in one of the many areas of patient safety.

MSc students may be able to carry out their research project in their own place of work. This will allow them to embed the knowledge and skills they have learned into their own area of practice.

This course is designed to help students become leaders in patient safety and quality. Through exposure to internationally-renowned teaching staff and blended-learning workshops, practicums and experiential learning, students are equipped with the tools to tackle challenges arising from healthcare’s ever-changing landscape.

An emphasis is placed on translation and leadership, bringing together theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of how to make a sustainable change.

You are guided by expert instructors and best-practice case studies to think outside-the-box on the architecture, implementation and evaluation of patient safety and quality solutions.

The programme is designed to provide a solid foundation for those who work in patient safety and quality. You can expect to gain theoretical understanding, practical know-how and training in academically rigorous approaches to solving patient safety and quality challenges.

Careers

We expect graduates of the programme to be well-placed to advance in a range of directions. Safety and quality are becoming increasingly important topics in the national dialogue of health systems, including the NHS.

This is further compounded by tightening national budgets. As such, individuals who can demonstrate an understanding of the factors that contribute to patient safety lapses and the know-how of how to address them are increasingly valued by employers.

Tuition fees and funding

The level of tuition fees you pay is based on your fee status, which we assess based on UK government legislation.

For more information on the funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Fees and Funding website.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees (Home and EU students)

2018 entry
Postgraduate Certificate £6,900
Postgraduate Diploma £4,140
MSc £2,760
Tuition fees are listed separately, please read the following text.

This course is divided into three progressional levels of study. Each level results in three separate qualifications (PG Cert, PG Dip and MSc). The tuition fees listed above apply separately to each qualification.

Except where otherwise indicated, the fees for students on courses lasting more than one year will increase annually by an amount linked to inflation, including for part-time students on modular programmes. The measure of inflation used will be the Retail Price Index (RPI) value in the April of the calendar year in which the academic session starts e.g. the RPI value in April 2019 will apply to fees for the academic year 2019–2020.

Consequently, if on successful completion of the PG Cert, you choose to progress to the next level (PG Dip), the tuition fee for the PG Dip may be higher than the fee listed here – which is for students starting the PG Dip in 2018. All students must apply to the PG Certificate in the first instance.

Please note, you can’t get a Postgraduate loan for this course from the UK government because the loan is only available for the MSc and it is not possible to apply for the MSc as a standalone qualification in the first instance.
