This project would investigate the anisotropy of metals and porous compacts which display directionally-dependent properties across quasi-static, intermediate and shock loading strain-rates and utilise state of the art diagnostics such as high-speed photography, stress and strain gauges, HetV, line VISAR. The overall goal is to develop a better understanding of critical transitions (eg. dynamic yield point, phase transition thresholds etc) as related to loading direction along a crystal axis.

The project would use the full range of experimental platforms at ISP-Imperial and Cranfield University. The ultimate aim – when is it critical to include anisotropy and when can a much simpler isotropic material model be used?
