Academic experience

This section tells you what your academic experience will be based on two scenarios:

  • under partial COVID restrictions, which allows students to be on campus whilst following guidelines including face covering, observing social distancing and good hygiene; and
  • under full COVID restrictions, which means a return to lockdown, should there be another outbreak of coronavirus.

Personal Tutoring

Under partial COVID restrictions: Personal tutorials will take place either in multi-mode format or remotely, depending on your Department.

Under full COVID restrictions: Personal tutorials will take place remotely.

Centre for Academic English

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: All provision will be delivered remotely. You can keep up-to-date with the latest information by visiting the Centre for Academic English’s webpages.

Imperial Horizons

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: All provision will be delivered remotely.

Library Skills and Training

Under partial COVID restrictions: All services will be accessible remotely. Library meeting rooms will be adapted for 1-2-1 training.

Under full COVID restrictions: All services will be accessible remotely.

Placements/Internships

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: Your placement may be cancelled or rescheduled.  The College will need to adhere to placement provider’s requirements as well as to UK travel advice during the period of your placement, and if opportunities arise. Your Department will contact you concerning the alternative module(s) that will be available to you.

Supervision

Under partial COVID restrictions: The extent of remote/multi-mode supervision available will be defined by your home/host department.

Under full COVID restrictions: Supervision will take place remotely.

UROP

Under partial COVID restrictions: The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme has continued to run throughout the Summer. Staff and students have worked hard to minimise the impact of the pandemic on their projects and continue working together collaboratively remotely. Departments and Co-ordinators are now gathering feedback on their participants’ experience this Summer to inform them how UROP will operate next year. It is the College’s intention that the Programme remains available.
Under full COVID restrictions: UROPs may take place if opportunities arise and can be delivered remotely. The number and range of available of UROPs may be restricted.

StudentShapers

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: The StudentShapers programme will continue to run throughout the academic year in a remote format. Projects continue to be commissioned, carried out, and completed. The College anticipates opportunities to continue to arise across Faculties in the Autumn term and beyond.

Study Abroad

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: Your year abroad may be cancelled or rescheduled. The College will adhere to partner institution requirements as well as to travel advice during your year abroad. Your department will contact you concerning the degree that will be available for you to transfer to.

Interdepartmental exchanges

Under partial COVID restrictions: Teaching will take place either through a multi-mode format or remotely, depending on the host Department.

Under full COVID restrictions: Teaching will take place remotely.

Faculty of Natural Sciences (FoNS) Make-A-Difference Competition (MAD)

Under partial COVID restrictions: The competition starts in January and dependent on the official government guidance at that time it may run normally, as in previous years, with additional online activities.

Under full COVID restrictions: The competition will be delivered fully online, with decisions to be made on the feasibility of lab placements at the time.

Research culture and environment

This section tells you what the research culture and environment will be like in two scenarios:

  • under partial COVID restrictions, which allows students to be on campus whilst following guidelines including face covering, observing social distancing and good hygiene; and
  • under full COVID restrictions, which means a return to lockdown, should there be another outbreak of coronavirus.

Student-supervisor partnerships

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: You will work together with your Supervisor based on the College’s student-supervisor guidelines.

Supervisory meetings

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: You will follow the College’s guidance on remote supervision meetings.

Examinations: (ESA, LSR and Viva)

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: You will follow the College’s remote examinations guidance.

Graduate School workshops

Under partial COVID restrictions: The Graduate School will deliver fully remote teaching during the Autumn and Spring term. We will be able to offer face-to-face teaching in the Summer term, subject to room availability and official government guidance.

Under full COVID restrictions: The Graduate School will deliver fully remote teaching during the Autumn and Spring term.

Graduate School presence on campus

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: Graduate School staff will continue to work from home until such time as the College asks them to return. This means that there will not be a physical office next to the Student Hub at the South Kensington Campus. However, all students can contact the Graduate School by email.

Postgraduate Student Coaching and Research Degree Mediation

Under partial and full COVID restrictions: The postgraduate student coaching programme and research degree mediation programme will be available fully remotely.
