This webpage tells you what clubs and societies and music and art facilities will be available to you under three scenarios:

  • minimal COVID restrictions
  • partial COVID restrictions, which allows students to be on campus whilst following guidelines
  • full COVID restrictions, which means a return to lockdown, should there be another outbreak of coronavirus.

Clubs, societies and projects at Imperial College Union

Minibus service for student clubs and societies travelling across the country

Under partial COVID restrictions: The minibus service is suspended until relaunch in January 2021, barring those exceptions where the College requires a minibus for the necessary transport of goods or people.

Under full COVID restrictions: The minibus service is suspended.

Large events

Under partial COVID restrictions: Large events (30 or more people) will not be able to take place until government guidance states this is safe to do so. We will encourage all groups to host smaller, more frequent events, or host online.

Under full COVID restrictions: Any in-person event (large or small) will be held online.

Trips and tours

Under partial COVID restrictions: Students may plan for trips & tours in the UK for the Autumn Term and International/UK trips and tours for Spring and Summer terms.

Under full COVID restrictions: All trips and tours will be suspended until further notice.

Blyth Centre for Music and Art

Named after an Imperial member of staff (Neville Blyth), this remarkable facility provides members of the College with purpose-built music practice facilities as well as an art gallery. Visit the Blyth Centre website for the latest news and events.

Delivery during COVID-19:

Music

Practice rooms

Under partial COVID restrictions: They will be open with limited access to the practice rooms from 08:00 – 20:00 Monday – Friday for the Autumn term. With assistance from Security checking all staff and students have left the Centre at 20:00.

All users must book a practice room 48 hours in advance. Names and CID numbers will be kept for track and trace records. Users will no longer be able to use rooms without booking. Spot checks will be made to ensure compliance. Each booking should not exceed one hour per day, in line with current guidance. You will be allowed to enter the Centre only on the day you have booked a room. You must use your swipe card to access the centre, but there will be restrictions for your safety.

Also note:

  • Users must use the hand sanitiser provided by Solo 5 before and after their booking
  • Sanitised wipes will be available from the Centre Administrator to wipe down music stands if required
  • Additional furniture will be removed from each practice room (including extra chairs, stands and piano stools)
  • Face coverings should be worn in the hallway of the Centre
  • Maximum occupancy will be indicated on each practice room door
  • The Director of the Blyth Centre, Oliver Gooch, is available to provide musical mentor support and advice either through a face-to-face socially distanced meeting or online

Under full COVID restrictions: There will be no access to the Blyth Centre. Support for art and music cubs will still be available online and through online meetings. Online meetings will be held until they can take place in person.

Music lessons

Under partial COVID restrictions: Music lessons with the Blyth’s music teachers will be available from October 2020 either in the Centre’s practice rooms or online (MS Teams or Zoom). If interested in lessons email Naomi Anderson-Eyles.

Under full COVID restrictions: Online lessons will be available with the professional artist (musicians).

Lunchtime concerts

Under partial COVID restrictions: Lunchtime concerts will be held either in Great Hall or Read lecture theatre. All lunchtime concerts in the autumn term will be able to be streamed online with downloadable programme. You must book a ticket in advance if you wish to attend the lunchtime concerts. Please see the Blyth Centre What’s On Events page for online ticketing information. All online tickets will be made available through Eventbrite for the concerts you wish to attend in person. You will be asked to follow College and Government guidance on social distancing. Hand sanitisers will be available..

Under full COVID restrictions: Lunchtime concerts will be streamed online only. If we are unable to get the musicians together we will ask them to send us a video to put up on the website.

Music locker access in the Blyth Centre

Under partial COVID restrictions: Music lockers will be accessed by appointment only in the autumn term. If you would like a music locker you will need to email Naomi Anderson-Eyles expressing your interest in using a locker.

Under full COVID restrictions: Music lockers will be accessed by appointment only in the autumn term. If you would like a music locker you will need to email Naomi Anderson-Eyles expressing your interest in using a locker.

Musical instrument rental

Under partial COVID restrictions: If you are interested in renting an instrument from the Blyth Centre we have a limited selection available unless the instrument is already out on loan.

Under full COVID restrictions: If you are interested in renting an instrument from the Blyth Centre we have a limited selection available unless the instrument is already out on loan.

Art

Art classes, drop-ins and tutorials

Under partial COVID restrictions: All art classes, drop-ins and tutorial sessions will be held online/remotely for the Autumn term.

To take part in our arts events, please join our mailing list from your Imperial email account.

  • Open online-themed art classes/online art drop–in will take place on Wednesdays 12:00 - 14:00 starting on 7 October.
  • Art classes/workshops take place on Wednesdays 12:30 – 13:30 starting on 14 October until 2 December 2020.

Under full COVID restrictions: There will be no access to the Art Studio in the Autumn term. Full online/remote services will be available.

Tutorials/Head of Art

Under partial COVID restrictions: The Blyth Centre will provide one-to-one tutorials of 20 minutes’ length between 13:40 – 15:00, offering 3 sessions per tutor per week online. You will receive bespoke feedback and support from a professional artist. These 20 minute tutorials will be responsive to you and your artwork.

Blyth Centre Art Gallery

Under partial COVID restrictions: Exhibitions in the Blyth Art Gallery will continue, but access in person may be restricted or not possible. We ask anyone who wants to view the shows to check for announcements about in-person viewing of the exhibitions.

Under full COVID restrictions: Online shows and a list of previous artists who have exhibited are available to view on the Blyth Centre website.

Club or Society Event Promotion

Under partial COVID restrictions: If you need assistance promoting your society event contact Naomi Anderson-Eyles. Events will be either online or face-to-face with social distance meeting.

Under full COVID restrictions: Online/remote service will be held until they can take place in person.
