A message of introduction to staff from President Gast - 1 September 2014
It is a great honour to begin my tenure as President of Imperial. My family and I are delighted to be here among you at this great institution.
I have always been impressed with Imperial College London. It is a great university with a longstanding commitment to excellence. Imperial combines leadership in research and education with a collaborative spirit and global connections. It is a place where research discoveries advance knowledge and improve society and students are taught to be independent thinkers. I am very excited to become an advocate and champion for our mission and our community.
I thank Sir Keith O’Nions for his leadership and am grateful to be building on the foundation he has laid. He has assembled a terrific leadership team and his many contributions have built a positive momentum that prepares Imperial for an exciting and productive future.
The grand challenges facing the world and the complex approaches to surmounting them require the type of integrated international teams in which Imperial students and academics thrive. Our strengths in science, engineering, medicine and business are, and will continue to be, invaluable in addressing these challenges.
This work requires new environments, and the campus under development at Imperial West represents an unprecedented opportunity to catalyse our academic community by creating a new model for education, research, innovation and engagement. I believe that great opportunity arises and creativity happens at this intersection.
Collaboration across geographic boundaries and academic disciplines is essential. Imperial has excelled at collaboration and will continue to do so. Collaboration is also the path I will follow as Imperial’s President. It is our collective efforts that are required to maintain and advance Imperial’s excellence.
One of the great privileges of my professional life has been the opportunity to work with people who care deeply about what they do, who devote themselves to the advancement of knowledge and who endeavour to make the world a better place. Since my appointment was announced in January, I have greatly benefited from your observations and counsel. I look forward to learning more about the College as I meet more of you in the weeks ahead, and to gaining your insights and suggestions about how we can build upon Imperial’s greatness.
While I am new to London and Imperial, I already feel at home.
I look forward to working with you all.
With best wishes,
Alice P. Gast
