To do this the College will Implement the College Energy Policy:

1. Reduce CO₂ emissions from energy consumption in accordance with the current Carbon Management Plan.
2. Use, where possible, energy from low carbon technology, such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), or renewable energy sources rather than from fossil fuel sources.
3. Provide specifications and briefing documents aimed at low Co₂ emissions for new developments.
4. Operate an energy management system which closely monitors energy use against published targets.

Imperial College London is a world-class teaching and research institution providing scientific and technical excellence, innovation and solutions for the global needs of the 21st Century. Best practice in energy management will become increasingly important in support of this position.

The College aims to become the leading UK academic institution in applied energy efficiency and utility management, demonstrating sound environmental governance and global citizenship, and providing a showcase low carbon heritage estate.

This will be achieved by:

1. Energy management including the implementation of an Energy Management Strategy, clearly defined objectives, targets, responsibilities and operating principles, and the efficient management of energy in the estate.
2. Energy efficient design including Energy Standards, Monitoring and Targeting systems, continuous improvement of the estate and best practice in new buildings.
3. Implement ‘People’ solutions including education in efficient energy use and the development of a culture of energy awareness and accountability.
4. Procurement, which integrates low/renewable energy and carbon reduction into decisions regarding energy purchasing and generation and the purchase of equipment and materials.

The College’s Energy Management Strategy will be reviewed and updated annually.

Energy Targets

The College will exceed the requirements of environmental legislation and advisory codes of practice where practicable, environmental benefit can be demonstrated and to achieve the following basic strategy:

1. Reducing the unit cost of energy.
2. Reducing the number of energy units used.
3. Energy Monitoring.
4. Using Green Energy.

The College has therefore set the following targets for its operations:

1. Set a baseline for CO₂ emissions.
2. Reduce CO₂ emissions progressively to meet the requirements of the Carbon Reduction Commitment and in accordance with the College Carbon Management Plan.
3. Provide a metering strategy across the College which allows monitoring of energy consumption to the required detail and accuracy.
4. Apply regular comparison of building performance against published benchmarks.
5. Ensure new development, upgrades and refurbishments are carried out to College policies, specifications and briefing documentation.
6. Where possible apply independent environmental assessment methods (for example BREEAM) to new development.
7. Consider use of Green Energy from suitably certified providers.
