Can you provide more study spaces and group study spaces?

As the country went into lockdown in March 2020 we had to close the physical library buildings and quickly move to providing a fully remote library service. The Library buildings reopened in September 2020 and have remained open even during subsequent lockdowns and restrictions in 2021. Due to COVID-19 safety measures, these spaces opened at a much-reduced capacity. Central Library initially opened with a capacity of 738 but we have been able to expand this to 997 (normal capacity 1411). The newly opened GoStudy spaces on levels 4 and 5 in the Chemistry Building on the South Kensington campus offer a further 250 spaces in a variety of study environments including Silent Study, Group Study and Breakout Spaces where students can eat and drink.

As we come out of the pandemic in 2022 we hope to be able to return to full capacity across all our libraries, opening up group study spaces at the same time.

Please improve covid control / Please get rid of face covering rules and notices

Safety requirements within our libraries are in line with the College’s ongoing response to the changing COVID-19 situation to ensure that working and learning in person remains as safe as possible. See the College’s COVID-19 – updates and guidance and Library Services Covid-19 safety regulations for full details.

Improve the toilets at Central Library

The toilets are regularly inspected, and any reported faults attended to by the College Estates department. Maintenance and upgrading to some of the toilets were planned for December 2021 but due to the COVID-19 situation have been rescheduled to take place as soon as possible in 2022.

Can 24 hour opening at Central Library be extended to Fridays?

The Central Library is open 24 hours all week except on Fridays. This is to allow for PC upgrades and thorough cleaning throughout the whole library.

Please do more to maintain quiet on levels 4 and 5 Central Library

We provide different types of study space to suit your style of working. Each floor is clearly signed with its designated study environment. Please make sure you are in the correct space to meet your study requirements and observe the signage.

  • Silent study - levels 2 and 3
  • Quiet study - levels 1, 4 and 5
  • Group study - level 1
  • Group study, silent study and breakout spaces are also available in GoStudy.

Our Library Attendants regularly patrol all floors and will be pleased to help maintain the study environment. You can also talk to them at the Information Hub, call or text anonymously on 020 7594 8883.

We request that you take phone calls in our Phone Zones and that you talk quietly when moving around. Students talking in groups or loudly on levels 2-4 will be asked to move to level 1.

Eating and drinking

A number of you requested a vending machine, healthier snacks and longer hours in the Library Café. The Café underwent a full refurbishment over the Summer of 2021 and offers an extensive range of hot and cold food and drink. It is staffed 08.00 - 23.00 on weekdays and 10.00 - 17.00 at the weekend . Vending machines and seating are available 24 hours a day. Suggestions will be passed to College catering for their consideration.

Hot water and microwaves are available in GoStudy.
