Erasmus+ was a European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. It ran for seven years, from 2014 to 2020, with organisations invited to apply for funding each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.

As a consequence of the UK Governments decision not to seek participation in the new Erasmus scheme (2021-27) the College will conclude its involvement as a reciprocal partner in Erasmus by May 2023.

Erasmus+ aimed to modernise education, training and youth work across Europe, and furthered the progress made under previous programmes. It was open to education, training, youth and sport organisations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector. It offered exciting opportunities for UK participants to study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad in Europe.

Imperial College participated in Erasmus+

In order to participate in Erasmus+ the College applied for and was awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (PDF) [1MB]. The application required the College to be clear as to its support for the objectives of Erasmus+ (which is closely tied to the EU Commission’s modernisation agenda for higher education) as an integral part of its strategy through the composition of an Erasmus Policy Statement.

Erasmus+ was divided into 3 Key Actions:

• Key Action 1: Mobility of Staff and Students (Traditional Student Exchanges; Work/Industrial Placements for Students; Teaching Exchanges for Staff; Training Visits for Staff).

• Key Action 2: Cooperation for Innovation and Exchange of Good Practices (knowledge alliances, strategic partnerships, sector skills alliances, capacity building).

• Key Action 3: Support for Policy Reform.

At Imperial College:

• Key Action 1 was administered by Registry.

• Key Actions 2 and 3 were administered by the International Relations Office.
