As part of the South Kensington Redevelopment programme, construction works are currently underway across the Sherfield Building, including the Great Hall and Levels 3, 4 and 5. Guided by Imperial’s Great Environment vision, this programme aims to create world-class spaces that support innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.
The works are set to be completed ahead of the Autumn Term 2025, with the exception of the Great Hall works, which will continue throughout the next academic year. This redevelopment will transform South Kensington Campus, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of students, staff, and the wider community, while reinforcing our commitment to creating a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative environment.
On Levels 3, 4 and 5, significant progress is being made on the development of new lecture theatres, a new student space and improved areas for student support services:
Level 3: Teaching
Progress is being made on the development of three new shallow raked lecture theatres, each accommodating approximately 130 students. These lecture theatres will be equipped with improved study and break-out spaces.
Level 4: Student Space
While construction works are underway, temporary spaces are being established to ensure minimal disruption, including a new student study area opening on Level 4 in early June. Refurbishment work will then take place over July and August, transforming it into a dedicated Student Space with self-cook, social and study spaces.
Level 5: Student Support
A key feature of this redevelopment is the creation of a dedicated floor on Level 5 for key student-facing services. These services include Careers, the Student Hub, Student Counselling, Student Support and the Disability Advisory Service. The relocation is being carried out in stages to minimise disruption. The Student Hub is now complete, with Student Counselling set to relocate from mid-May 2025. The final phase will see the Disability Advisory Service and remaining Student Support services relocated in September 2025, offering students a more streamlined and supportive experience.
Any information about how this will impact room locations or sessions is being communicated by the respective service providers in these areas.
The Sherfield Building works also encompass the redevelopment of Imperial’s Great Hall, a project which will see the space futureproofed to provide world-class teaching and learning in the years to come. Detailed information about this project can be found on our project webpage.
We recognise that the disruption caused by these works, such as noise, access changes, and increased contractor presence, can be frustrating and may impact your experience working and studying on campus. Every effort is being made to minimise disruption (including the use of hand-tools and out-of-hours work where possible), the provision of alternative spaces, and the rollout of physical guidance on-site.
We appreciate your continued patience and understanding as these long-term improvements take shape. If you experience any significant issues or are unsure who to speak to, please don’t hesitate to contact a Building Manager or reach out to our Customer Service team, who can provide greater clarity.
