In addition to more than 3,500 alumni who support Imperial College London philanthropically each year, over 700 alumni volunteer their time and energy to support the College.

As an alumni volunteer you can help ensure that Imperial continues to attract the brightest and best students, or support students in your own Department. You can also get involved with our global network of groups, organise or speak at an event or help us to raise funds.

By volunteering with us, you will have the opportunity to give something back to the next generation of graduates and alumni early in their career, to build your network and to gain valuable volunteer experience. Opportunities to take part are available worldwide, and from the comfort of your own home or office.

Answer a student's question

Ask an AlumnusAsk an Alumnus provides a service for students to ask a one-off question to an alumnus in industry. You can volunteer to be added to our database, and your data will be displayed anonymously to the student until you reply to their question.

We will forward to you a maximum of five questions answered by email per year.

Further information and the registration form can be found on the Ask an Alumnus page.

Become a professional in residence

Professional in residenceProfessional in residence presents you with an opportunity to talk about your occupation with engaged students in a relaxed setting. Normally based in the Careers Centre on campus (or via Skype) these one to one sessions allow students to gain invaluable insights into occupations and industry sectors.

You would normally agree to be available for between 2 and 3 hours, morning or afternoon, on a date that is convenient to you seeing a series of students in short 15 to 20 minute slots. Sessions take place all year round during term time. These sessions need very little lead in time and can be arranged with a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice.

Contact Robert Carpenter for further details on how you can get involved.

Become an alumni mentor

Alumni mentoringThe Alumni Mentoring Scheme pairs you with a current student to help to develop their confidence and insight into job roles and work sectors. We give priority to students who have come to the College via our Widening Participation initiatives. As a Mentor you will have an opportunity to develop your mentoring and coaching skills as well as helping to keeping you connected with student life at Imperial today.

Over 100 mentors and mentees were matched in 2015/16, providing students with a sounding board for their career ideas.

We would expect you to arrange a minimum of 6 interactions with your student, with 2 of these being face-to-face (or via Skype) during the mentoring period. The Mentoring Programme runs annual from January to October, with an induction event in December.

Join a speaker panel

Alumni speakerWe often work with departments in suggesting guests to talk at events for their student cohort. These could include being part of a panel of speakers or taking part in a speed networking session.

Talks tend to be around one hour in length. Speed Networking sessions usually last for approximately two hours. Most events of this kind would be scheduled in the early evening but occasionally during the lunchtime period. These events take place mostly during the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Get in contact with the team at if you’re interested in putting yourself forward as a speaker.

Organise a class reunion

Class reunionThe Alumni Office is keen to help alumni stay in touch with each other, so are incredibly grateful to our alumni who organise reunions for contemporaries and classmates.

We are on hand to provide advice and support through the planning process, from sending invitations to providing merchandise for the event itself.

Take part in a themed career week

Themed career weeksThe Careers Service runs three themed, ‘Focus on…’ weeks over the course of the year, each including a range of activities: lunchtime talks, workshops and even Skype chat sessions.

Most sessions are around 1 hour in length but we also run longer 2.5 hour workshops. The format can vary but include short one to ones, informal small group discussions and large size lectures. Sessions are normally held during the day.

The themes for this year are:

  • Environment – November 2016
  • Enterprise (SMEs and Entrepreneurship) – February 2017
  • Science Communication and Policy – March 2017

Write a careers case study

Case Studies are an invaluable resource for prospective students and current students.  We have a growing collection of personal career case studies provided by alumni which help students understand what options they have in relation to their degree discipline and also illustrate career progression. Students can search the case studies on our website by degree discipline.

We look for a short piece of text approximately one to two sides of A4 giving an outline of your career to date, a picture of what your job involves and the skills you are using as well as some tips for those interested in entering your sector.  We can provide a template of questions to help you structure your case study.

We are happy to receive case studies from alumni at any time of the year.

Examples of existing case studies can be found at
