Dr Kuangyi Zhang Strength Assessment and Modelling for Thick CFRP Composite Laminates

The research focuses on the mechanical properties measurement and damage evolution identification and quantification of Polymer Matrix Composite used in aircrafts and wind turbines. Testing procedures include tensile, torsion, shear, bending and fatigue loadings. Imaging methods cover from SEM, Digital Imaging Correlation, X-ray Computer Tomography.

Current concern is on designing shear and bending tests to optimise the out-plane properties measurement approaches of thick Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics Composite used in aircraft wing structure. Also, Finite Element Analysis is in progress to model this complicated issue.
