Probability and Statistics for Bioengineering

Module aims

In this module you will be introduced to probability theory and will develop the statistical knowledge and skills required for the advanced years of your Bioengineering programme. During the module you will be introduced to the maths concepts that underly statistical models as well as developing an understanding of how to apply these models to real world data. 

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module you will be able to: 

  • Calculate common statistical quantities such as mean, standard deviation, confidence intervals and probabilities 
  • Compare different probability distributions including the Gaussian and Poisson distributions 
  • Debate the merit and the limitations of the central limit theorem 
  • Apply common statistical analysis such as test for statistical significance and linear regression

  • Continuous random variables and probability distributions 
  • Joint probability distributions and random samples 
  • Parameter estimation and intervals 
  • Hypothesis testing

  • Non-parametric hypothesis testing 
  • Regression
