Industrial Applications of Cellular Engineering

Module aims

This module will introduce you to the different industrial applications of cellular engineering and synthetic biology. This course will show how academic research can lead to applied science with direct impact in industry and society. In particular, you will learn how engineering cell behaviours has applications in the following fields:

- Industrial biotechnology and the bioproduction of chemicals

- Sustainable agricultural and food industry

- Environment and biofuels

- Biomedicine; particularly pharmaceutical production, advanced diagnostics, and microbiome engineering.

- Production of advanced Materials

Learning outcomes

At Level 6 (3rd year students)

Upon successful completion of this module you will be able to: 

- Describe how basic research in cell engineering and synthetic biology can be used for biotechnological and biomedical applications

- Describe how applied academic research in cell engineering and synthetic biology can be transferred to industry

- Evaluate the state of the art of cell engineering and synthetic biology applications in the manufacturing of fuels, chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals, etc

- Discuss cases of success from industries in the field

- Write a research report to a professional standard

At Level 7 (4th year/MSc students)

Upon successful completion of this module you will be able to: 

- Describe how basic research in cell engineering and synthetic biology can be used for biotechnological and biomedical applications

- Formulate how applied academic research in cell engineering and synthetic biology can be transferred to industry

- Evaluate the state of the art of cell engineering and synthetic biology applications in the manufacturing of fuels, chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals, etc

- Analyse cases of success from industries in the field

- Write a research report to a professional standard

Assessments

At level 6 (3rd year students)

●  Written exam: 60% weighting

●  Written report: 40% weighting

 

At level 7 ( 4th year/MSc students)

●  Written exam: 50% weighting

●  Written report: 50% weighting
