At Imperial College Business School we recognise that your personal development and career progression are of huge importance and a key reason you have decided to embark on an MBA. Our Careers programme is designed as an integral element of your MBA to support your career ambitions, whatever they may be. Here are five ways the Careers Service supports your career and personal development goals:

  1. Personal Leadership Journey (PLJ)

Through the PLJ you will identify your own individual strengths and areas for development in terms of your leadership capability and professional effectiveness. The PLJ emphasises three areas that are key to any MBA students’ career success: self-awareness; professional development; and careers strategy. We support you on your journey with a dedicated Careers Consultant, psychometric assessment, and a variety of workshops. The PLJ is designed to help you think about where you want to be as a leader and the steps you need to take to help you achieve that goal.

  1. Interview a Leader

Through the ‘Interview a Leader’ assignment, you have the opportunity to choose an inspiring leader(s) whose experience, skills or achievements resonate with you. This exercise is about using a role model that you can learn from and be inspired by – reflecting on the leadership journey of others can be really powerful in understanding your own personal development as a leader.

“I found the Interview a Leader exercise to be one of the best assignments of the MBA programme. Not only did it help open doors to explore other positions and industries, it also allowed for candid conversations with leaders who shared experiences and leadership challenges that are not easily observable. It is eye-opening to hear directly from the source.”  Dessi Sevdina Weekend MBA 2017

“The ‘Interview a Leader’ assignment gives you a great excuse to contact top leaders in industries that you’re interested in.”  Alexander Rodriguez-Melo Full-Time MBA 2015-16

  1. World Café

World Café is a networking event run twice a year, open to all full and part-time MBA students. The format is deliberately informal, allowing alumni from a range of industries, at various career stages and from diverse backgrounds to hold roundtable discussions. The event is always incredibly popular with students as it allows them to engage with alumni in personalised, small group settings, asking questions that would not be possible at more formal recruitment events. Students regularly tell us that this is the best event they have attended as part of their MBA programme.

  1. Build your network

Networking is a critical tool in the world of business but is not a skill that comes naturally to us all. Through networking workshops and practical activities, we help you to build your confidence and hone your approach to gain maximum impact from networking opportunities. We provide a number of occasions for you to build your network, from our online MBA forum linking current students across MBA cohorts to attending employer events or joining our World Café. We also support a number of Careers Clubs which provide a great opportunity for you to meet students with similar interests across the Business School, and to attend events with corporate speakers from industry.

  1. Access to resources

As an MBA student, you will have access to a wide range of online specialised eResources to help you with industry research and job search preparation. These include a range of psychometric, situational and assessment tests, case-study preparation tools and information on national and international executive recruiters. We subscribe to a range of resources including, Evisors, Goinglobal, Hoovers, MBA Exchange, and Workmaze.

Our sector-specific teams support students with an interest in a particular industry (e.g. Consulting, Finance, and Technology), offering tailored support in the form of workshops, drop-ins and intensives, to help your applications within that sector.

From the moment you accept your offer of a place on the Imperial MBA, you will benefit from the support and guidance available from our Careers Service. Whether you are looking to progress within your organisation, or are seeking a new challenge, we will help you take an active approach.
