Imperial College Business School’s Dr Annabelle Gawer recently spoke as a Witness in the House of Lords formal inquiry into digital platforms. The inquiry is being led by the House of Lords EU internal market sub-committee.

As a widely recognised expert of digital platforms, Dr Gawer was asked to open up the first of what will be 15 evidence gathering sessions exploring the foundations of digital platform use, and possible regulatory frameworks.

Dr Gawer is an Associate Professor in Strategy and Innovation within the Management Department in the Business School, and said of the appointment: “It was a great honour and privilege to be asked to frame the debate and share my expertise on the phenomenon of online platforms for such a distinguished audience.

“We are at a crucial juncture where the pervasive success of digital platforms such as Google and Facebook is creating what I call “platform anxiety” in Europe. Regulators are considering these new developments and want to get educated in how these digital platforms operate, and how we can keep the benefits of the value they create, while making sure we keep guaranteeing fairness in the protection of citizens privacy and the process of competition.”

The outcome of the inquiry will include a written report with recommendations to the UK government regarding what position to adopt regarding possible regulation of digital platforms.
