In September, we welcomed 325 students across our suite of management programmes, as they start their one-year journey at Imperial College Business School. Our Management programmes include:

It is wonderful to see that this year’s MSc Management students have very diverse academic and international backgrounds, bringing a wealth of experience to the programme. Gender parity

The Business School is committed to achieving gender parity and we’re delighted that this year 57% of students on our management programmes are female.

Empowering ambitious talented women with the skills, business acumen and network to achieve their potential in graduate management education and beyond is a crucial step to tackling the global issue of gender equality in business and leadership.

A truly diverse cohort

Across the management Master’s programmes, students come from a range of academic backgrounds and countries. 61 nationalities are represented across the suite, a diversity that will enable students to grow a valuable network. Dr Benita Cox, Programme Director, MSc International Health Management, says, “We are proud of the wide diversity of the MSc International Health Management cohort. Our students span a broad range of nationalities, backgrounds, experience and age groups – but there is a real sense of connection amongst them all.”

The myriad of backgrounds students have access to will expand their global awareness and learning opportunities, as they are exposed to a variety of business cultures and working practices, especially as students collaborate on group projects throughout the year. Each student on our management programmes has achieved academic excellence in their respective educational background. Anu Wadhwa, Programme Director, MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management, says,

We are delighted to welcome the new MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management students to campus. The diversity of the cohort continues to be fantastic, in terms of gender balance, academic background, and nationalities. These talented students bring in an incredible variety of experience, skill sets, and perspectives and I am excited to see them bring their entrepreneurial ambitions to fruition in the coming year and beyond.

Induction

The term began with a series of induction activities designed to introduce students to their programme, each other, Imperial and London. Offering a warm welcome, Dean Professor Francisco Veloso and the Programme Directors greeted the new class with an overview of what they can expect in the exciting year ahead.

Kamila Kawecka, MSc Management student and Future Leaders scholarship winner, says,

My favourite part of the induction was, without a doubt, meeting new people. Being a top university, Imperial attracts incredible individuals – I can honestly say that each and every person I’ve met during the past two weeks confirmed that statement. I’m glad that the induction was run in such way as to allow us to get to know each other, with projects, discussions, presentations and games organised every day.

What I also appreciated a lot was the focus given to careers, I’ve never heard about any other school that puts so much effort into preparing its students for future work. It’s extremely valuable as almost all of us are now applying for jobs and an extra push is always welcome.

In addition to enhancing the students’ academic skills and knowledge, the Business School is committed to teaching students interpersonal and teamwork skills, essential for an international career in management. Students took part in a host of team-building induction activities to prepare them for group projects on the programme and to build networks across the Business School, including a trading game for MSc Management students, an international showcase where students presented their home country to the cohort, the Imperial Scavenger Hunt and the annual Imperial College Business School quiz.

MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management students visited Imperial’s White City Campus as part of their induction, attended a Personal Branding session ran by Joseph Liu and networked with alumni who have started their own companies or work as innovation professionals, including recent graduates Alexander Bleeker and Matthew Bingley.

Caroline Stormorken, MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management student, says,

Pointing out one specific part of the induction to be the best is difficult. The two weeks were very well organised, with a nice balance between social and academic aspects. The Quiz Night was entertaining, the Scavenger Hunt allowed us to explore campus in a fun way, and the personal pitches gave highly interesting insights to all the people in our cohort.

Our programme is a very sociable one, as it attracts people who are open-minded and creative, and that strive to network at every opportunity that comes along. This creates a social atmosphere both inside and outside of the classroom.

MSc International Health Management student Samuel James also says,

The highlight of the induction was the international showcase, where the class was split by country and each group presented on their country. It was great fun and lots of food from all over the world was featured!

Students were exposed to cutting edge research from faculty experts at the Imperial Business Insights 3:20 event, and networked with top consultants and companies at the Finance and Consulting Careers Fair organised by our Careers & Professional Development Service, including EY, McKinsey & Co, Bloomberg and Deloitte.

In addition to the induction activities, students also had the option to attend masterclasses hosted by the Careers & Professional Development Service, including a “Success at Selection” session from EY and a talk from Lombard Odier’s Head of Family Office Ahmed Husain.

MSc Management student Belynda Mabirizi says,

The masterclass from EY was useful – they gave insights into the culture, different sectors and roles at EY. The Careers & Professional Development Service offer a really good service which provides all the information and opportunities for me to succeed.

Imperial Business Insights Students

Meet some of the students across our management programmes:

Samuel James joins Imperial College Business School to study MSc International Health Management. Samuel joins the programme after studying Medicine at the University of Oxford. The highlight of the induction for Samuel was the international showcase, where the class was split by country and each group presented on their country. He says, “It was great fun and lots of food from all over the world was featured!” When asked why he chose Imperial, Samuel says, “Its great reputation and the unique nature of the programme, which combines business and healthcare like no other programme in the country.” After his Master’s, Samuel plans to move into consulting in the healthcare and life sciences sector. His role model in business is Elon Musk because of his “constant drive and desire to improve himself, his work and his products. It’s about believing you can achieve beyond anything that’s ever been done before.”

Caroline Stormorken joins MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management programme from her BSc (Hons) in Management (Innovation, Sustainability & Entrepreneurship) at The University of Manchester. When asked why she chose Imperial, she replied “For entrepreneurs, networks are crucial and Imperial is extraordinary on that aspect. There are vast opportunities for students with an entrepreneurial mindset, ranging from workshops on pitching for investment to the Imperial White City Incubator.” After her MSc, Caroline plans to get work experience in sustainable innovation for fast-moving consumer goods before starting her own business. Caroline’s role model in business is Richard Branson. She cites his amazing capability at spotting trends and using his position to power great humanitarian initiatives.

Kamila Kawecka joins MSc Management on a Future Leaders scholarship. After studying her Master’s in Business Management and History of Art, she worked as an Assistant Strategy Manager before deciding to study at Imperial. The highlights of induction for Kamila were meeting new people. She says, “Being a top university, Imperial attracts incredible individuals. I’m glad that the induction was run in such a way as to allow us to get to know each other. Overall, the induction has set off a truly collaborative spirit and has shown that this year will offer much more than I hoped for.” Kamila describes Imperial as “unique and future-oriented, which is important for me as technology is the industry that interests me the most.” Kamila plans to go into consulting after her Master’s with the long-term goal of starting her own company and becoming an angel investor.
