Making the most of Summer 2021 is at the top of most people’s agendas right now.

As the world begins to adapt to the new normal, there’s a great feeling of importance in how we make the most of our time; whether for leisure, education, career progress or working towards personal goals.

The last 12 months have provided many of us with a renewed sense of appreciation for the value of experiences, and a stronger drive than ever to make forward progress.

Whether you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate student, Imperial’s Summer School offers a unique and enriching opportunity to enhance your knowledge in an intense but highly social environment. The courses are designed to develop your practical skills in preparation for your next stage, whether that’s continuing your undergraduate study or readying for a post-graduate programme.

Available in either our multi-mode delivery format ( a blend of online and on-campus teaching in the heart of London), or fully online (Principles of Finance only available via online delivery), you can join Summer School in London or from wherever you are in the world. The courses are available over two sessions, with the option to study up to two courses (one from each session) in the subject/s that interest you most.

The courses available for each session are as follows:

Session one: 28 June - 16 July 2021

  • Business Analytics
  • Principles of Finance (online delivery only)

Session two: 19 July – 6 August 2021

  • Business Strategy & Consulting

Each course has been thoughtfully created using some of the most relevant and insightful topics from our world-class MSc and MBA programmes, to deliver useful introductions to some of the most pivotal areas in global business. In addition, each course also provides an opportunity to gain academic credit towards future studies, for those looking to go even further once the summer ends.

Here’s a closer look at what each course has to offer, and the core concepts you can expect to gain an understanding of during the three-week sessions.

Business Analytics

Focusing on prescriptive analytics, the Business Analytics course delivers a brief introduction to probability/statistics, decision trees and optimisation, and networks with applications in logistics and organisations.

By the end of the course, you will have a solid understanding of basic probability concepts and apply them in real-life situations. You’ll also build and solve decision trees, formulate various kinds of optimisation problems (and solve them in Excel and AMPL), and construct linear regression models for statistical analysis, estimating them in R.

Principles of Finance

Designed to develop your understanding of the rapidly evolving and exciting theory of finance, the Principles of Finance course is an introduction to the core concepts in finance. You will learn the nature and workings of financial markets and their use by corporations, investors and others, and the relevance of theory for financial and investment decision making.

By the end of the course, you’ll understand the basic principles of finance and financial theory, as well as how to apply the criteria that companies use to make investment decisions. In addition, you’ll cover the concepts of market efficiency, portfolio risk and diversification, the principal functions of capital markets, and the distinct features of main financial instruments including debt, equity and financial derivatives.

Academic teaching for this course will be delivered synchronously online. The campus will be open and students are welcome to follow the course online from the Business School. Students will be able to network with peers from other courses and join the social programme.

Business Strategy & Consulting

This course will enable you to diagnose, manage, design and change commonly faced challenges by organisations. Analysing concepts of consulting, you’ll be taught to actively and critically apply business strategy concepts, providing you with a strong understanding of approaches for managing consulting projects and clients.

By the end of the course, you’ll:

  • Have an understanding of the complexity that makes up an organisation’s strategic environment
  • Recognise the implications of strategic decisions
  • Gain insight into key skills and frameworks for effective consulting
  • Develop key skills in managing consulting projects to deliver value for clients.
