Throughout the year students on our Master’s programmes have been busy applying for jobs and perfecting their interview technique, and every step of the way, Imperial College Business School Careers has been there to help them. Find out about the different events that Careers hosted for Master’s students during the spring term.
Spring Careers Fair
Throughout the year, we welcome companies on campus for our Careers Fairs.
Thanks to Imperial’s reputation, we attract incredible companies on campus to recruit our students across all industries, from business analytics to consulting, finance, marketing and more. We hosted some of our student’s most sought-after companies including Bloomberg, Centrica, Concentra, Dyson, EY and more at the Spring Careers fair.
We also had innovative technology companies attend like Blippar, who specialise in augmented reality and computer vision and Jungle Creations, a startup that creates viral content for brands such as PepsiCo, Compare the Market and McDonald’s.
The fair gave students the unique opportunity to find out more about the graduate schemes and positions at these companies. Most importantly, they were able to network face-to-face with their HR and recruitment teams and connect with them on a personal level, something that is not possible with an electronic application.
Yiting Wang, an MSc Business Analytics student, speaks about how the fair benefits her quest for a summer internship:
I’m looking for a summer internship to apply what I have learned at Imperial College to a real business role. In fact, I have a summer internship interview with one of the companies who are here today. I didn’t do the interview until I came here to talk to their HR consultant to learn more about the company. I now have a better understanding of that company and I will perform better in the interview.
The fair is also very beneficial to the companies who attend. Emma Bevis, Talent Acquisition Partner at Dyson, speaks about the high calibre students she met at the fair. She says:
We’ve had some really good conversations with the students here. There’s such a good level of maturity and a lot of people have motivation. It’s great and refreshing to have the students come up to us and they have already researched Dyson and they know about the programme that they’re interested in. So we can really have some in-depth and great conversations about how they can apply and they’re asking for tips and hints and advice as well which is great. I’m looking forward to receiving a lot of applications.
Industry Panel Speaker Series
The Industry Panel Speaker Series was held over the spring term to give students the opportunity to learn from the experience of industry professionals. To accommodate our wide range of Master’s specialisations, we had panels on the consulting, energy, finance, FMCG, healthcare, social impact, sustainability and technology, media and communications sectors.
The panel themes were in keeping with the Business School’s position as global leaders in the fusion of business and technology, and our commitment to developing an entrepreneurial mindset and innovative thinking through our programmes. Some of the highlights:
- Brexit, AI & Cultural Agility…how will consulting evolve in 2018? Panel moderated by Jolande Bot-Vos, Programme Director of MSc Management, and featuring speakers from Delta Capita, Emergn, McKinsey & Company and PwC.
- Demystifying Data Analytics. Moderated by Dr Mark Kennedy, Associate Professor, and featuring speakers from HSBC, Ekimetrics, Expedia, fifty-five, L.E.K. Consulting. The Demystifying Data Analytics panel is especially relevant in light of the rising importance of analysing complex data to inform business decisions in all industries.
- Digital Marketing – Strategy and Innovation. Panel moderated by Ciara Riordan, Senior Broadcast Journalist at BBC, featuring speakers from Cyber Duck (CEO) and speakers from Celtra, Diageo and Wolf & Badger.
Azalea Micottis, a student on our MSc Management programme, discusses the benefits of employer events and the speaker series. She says:
The numerous employer recruitment events and career fairs across a variety of sectors, organised by the Business School, helped me build my network both within the university and in the corporate world. They also presented me with different perspectives on many industries which helped me formulate a more concrete plan for my future career goals.
The Business School prides ourselves on our strong ties to industry, which gives our students a competitive edge over other graduates when applying for jobs. Our Employer Breakfast gives representatives from the Careers service the opportunity to cement these relationships and connect with employers on a personal level.
The theme for this year’s Employer Breakfast was the ‘Future of Work’. The keynote speech delivered by Leila Guerra, Associate Dean, was on diversity in a dynamic and evolving business world. She touched on the growing importance of diversity in the past 10 years and its impact on businesses today. She says:
Research shows that the more diverse you are as a company and your boardroom, the more conflicts you are going to have and high-performance volatility, which leads to inefficiencies. As a business school, we need to address how we educate our students who will be future employees and managers of your company.
Following this, Lisa Umenyiora, Director of Careers, talked about the future trends in recruitment. Marie-Jo Wilson, Assistant Director of Careers, discussed the exciting developments in skills development that are preparing students for the future work world and finally, Sarah Ranchev-Hale, Assistant Director of Careers, talked about the best ways for the employers in the room to engage with Imperial’s students.
In the second half of the session, attendees participated in a breakout workshop about the future skills gap by sector. Finally, a student Q&A panel with either MBA or MSc students allowed the attendees to ask students their burning questions.
The event rounded off with a networking lunch which gave our students the chance to network with the employees in attendance.
As the academic year draws to a close, we are excited to hear our students securing fantastic positions on graduate schemes, summer internships and full-time roles. We look forward to continuing to provide a world-class, tailored Careers service to the incoming cohort.
