Over the summer on the Full-Time MBA, my classmates and I went our different ways. Some completed exchange programmes at top business schools across the world or worked on their individual projects – I spent the summer working as an intern at Amazon.
I first learnt about the internship opportunity in the Careers and Professional Development Service’s newsletter. Imperial College Business School is one of Amazon’s target schools, attracted to the entrepreneurship components of the Full-Time MBA and its connection to world technology leader, Imperial College London.
The Amazon Talent Program organised a site trip to one of the biggest Amazon Fulfilment Centres in the UK. I found the trip really interesting and felt encouraged to apply. After the online application and numerical test, Amazon interviewed candidates on Imperial’s South Kensington campus. The interview concentrated on our previous work experience and how we managed our work. Using Amazon’s Leadership Principles, they assessed whether we would fit in their culture.
To prepare myself for the interview, I used my tried and tested techniques from interview experience and a “STAR” approach to the leadership principles – I was ready for the questions! On the Full-Time MBA, students have a personal Careers Consultant and I practised with mine by doing a mock interview. I was really excited when I found out that I was successful and I would be spending my summer interning at Amazon!
During the internship, which was based in Dusseldorf in Germany, I worked on a special project to design and develop a system of sharing information with associates. I developed a website which functioned as an information kiosk similar in design to an ATM machine. Associates could scan their badge to log in and then read and print the information they received.
Throughout the project, I applied the methodology and content I learnt on the Design Thinking & Innovative Problem Solving and Marketing core classes to design the kiosk and communicate the new information centre to associates.
I’ve learnt many important concepts, ideas and frameworks on the Full-Time MBA that meant I worked more effectively, efficiently and professionally at Amazon. One clear example is the mindset around data analytics. The MBA has also developed my networking skills, including skills on how to work effectively with people and earn trust from others.
My experience on the one-year Imperial MBA has been a quick but unforgettable year in London. On the programme, I have met many brilliant people. Moreover, it gave me so much valuable knowledge and insight into the business world, it enabled me to reach to a larger platform.
I would definitely say that the Imperial MBA has helped me make the 360° transition: location, industry and function.
