In May 2017, Imperial College Business School launched the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation. The Centre focusses on research and teaching in health economics, policy and management. Students on MSc International Health Management benefit from the expertise of the Centre’s members, which builds on the School’s existing and longstanding work on health economics, policy and management.
The Business School is ideally placed for the Centre, leveraging the strengths of Imperial in medicine, public health and natural science – as well as being a world-leading university in healthcare research and teaching. Professor Franco Sassi, Director of the Centre, says, “We harness this research capacity to focus on the major health challenges facing society today, which cut across different areas of government policy and business.”
MSc International Health Management uniquely combines business-focused teaching and cutting-edge research. The faculty who teach on the programme are globally recognised as being at the forefront of health management research, preparing students for a management career in the global healthcare sector, and the interests and challenges therein.
Dr Benita Cox, Programme Director of MSc International Health Management, says, “Students have a unique opportunity to benefit from members of the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation, who include some of the most imminent global thinkers on a variety of healthcare management issues. These include Franco, who teaches a dynamic module on Contemporary Topics in Health Policy.”
Franco’s research explores the cause of the increase in chronic diseases in economically developed countries and what governments can do to address the consequences of chronic disease through policy.
“A unique and stimulating module is also offered by Professor James Barlow who takes an unusual stance in Managing Change and Innovation in Healthcare,” says Benita. Other members of the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation who also teach on the programme include Dr Marissa Miraldo (Health Economics), Pedro Rosa Dias (Health Systems Policy & Financing) and Dr Benita Cox (Health Informatics).
The Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation is currently developing a global health innovation index which will measure every country’s ability to innovate in public health and healthcare. The project will help governments worldwide make better policies in all aspects of population health and healthcare improvement. Franco says, “Policymakers will be able to understand where their country fits in terms of innovation capacity, relative to other countries.”
