In February 2017, Imperial College Business School will be launching one of the world’s first blended Executive MBAprogrammes. Building on our highly skilled in-house Edtech Lab and applying the learnings from our innovative Global Online MBA, we are creating a unique blend of teaching for Executive participants which combines online preparation with in-class learning.
Professor George Yip, Associate Dean for Executive Programmes, says, “We are launching one of the world’s first blended MBA programmes at a top global business school. Before each two-day block of in-classroom sessions, students will have sixteen hours of integrated, interactive online preparation sessions.
“This will allow us to achieve the new best practice of “the flipped classroom” by which most lecture material will be covered and learned outside the classroom, allowing much more time for discussion and application in the classroom sessions.”
The new interactive and integrated approach to the Executive MBA means participants can break down their learning into manageable parts in the most efficient way possible to adapt to a busy and demanding lifestyle. Participants are supported by our award-winning EdTech Lab and team of online tutors who ensure that they are supported through their whole learning journey. Read our Edtech team discuss our blended learning technology in the Wall Street Journal.
How it works
Participants on the Executive MBA programme will work through an online learning cell for each module to prepare for in-class teaching. The cells are split into one hour sessions and consist of a range of interactive learning tools designed to build and develop knowledge and share ideas with peers.
Developed by our Edtech Lab, the online learning cells include case studies, class quizzes, discussion and participation-based activities, assessments and recorded lectures. During the online preparation, Executive MBA participants will have access to tailored tutorial support to support their learning journey.
In-class learning takes place at our South Kensington campus one weekend a month, with four hours of teaching dedicated to each module. Participants will bring their learning and experiences to the classroom, having built their learning through personal study, to create a more effective and in depth learning experience.
Each Executive MBA participant is an expert in their field, and will bring their experience and insight into the in-class sessions. With the diversity of participants on the Executive MBA at Imperial, this enables participants to rapidly explore the subject material.
The flexibility of this unique blended approach is continued into the second year of the Executive MBA programme. Participants choose four electives (there is the option to study more than four electives) and can choose to do all four electives online or opt to study some or all electives with a blend of online and in-class learning.
Executive MBA participants will continue to benefit from the Executive Leadership Journey, our executive coaching programme, including a conference with Korn Ferry. Participants also attend three international residencies at the University of Hong Kong, ESMT in Berlin, and an Ivy League business school in the United States.
Professor George Yip says, “The Imperial EMBA is a transformational experience that will accelerate the careers of already successful organization leaders. At Imperial we place extra stress on the development of leadership capabilities with both an academic module on leadership and an Executive Leadership Journey comprising workshops, activities and expert talks through the entire two years. In addition, our unique Imperial Scientist speaker series enables EMBA participants to learn about specific technology issues that will have broad implications for business.”
