With over 340 clubs, societies and projects, Imperial College London has one of the largest varieties of student-led activities at a university in the UK. From something as serious such as Machine Learning to unique activities like the Cheese, and Sleep Society, there is surely something for your liking. The Business School itself has its own clubs that will support your future career and passions including the Finance Club, Consulting Club, Energy & Sustainability Club, and many others.
Among those abundant activities, I have tried the Debating and Model United Nations (MUN) club, but then I decided to be a member of the Imperial College Union Indonesian Society (yes, I was that actor who performed on Indonight 2019), and volunteering for a programme called What The Tech?!.
What the Tech?! is an award-winning workshop aimed at residents over the age of 50 living in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, set up by Imperial College Business School students in partnership with the Edward Woods Community Champions in 2017.
We come to the Edward Woods Community once a week, and senior residents will bring their electronic devices and consult their problems with us. Questions range from as simple as how to create an email account and how to set an alarm, to more advanced ones such as “is it safe to use the online banking feature?”. However, don’t worry, you don’t need to be a tech-expert to join this programme because I personally am not. If you don’t know the answers, you can ask other students to help you out, or just simply ask Mr Google!
After all, not only do they learn from us, but I believe that we learned a lot more from them. They sometimes tell us their stories, such as their experience travelling around the world, joining the war, and their views towards today’s world. It was so interesting to hear such invaluable knowledge from them.
Furthermore, What the Tech?! taught me how to communicate better and effectively in order to be understood by anyone regardless of their age. This is especially very important for a non-native English speaker like me.
For those of you who are going to attend Imperial College Business School, I suggest that you join What The Tech?! during your time here. I promise you will always leave in a good mood and de-stressed after attending the session. To realise that you have been helpful to someone is such a rewarding feeling. Thank you for all the lessons learned at What The Tech?!
