Each summer, we run a series of specialised Summer School courses on our South Kensington campus at Imperial College Business School, a world-leading and international institution. The courses are an opportunity for students to develop their academic knowledge and skills, whilst taking in the enriching experience London has to offer.
For three weeks in July and August, we welcomed students to our Business Strategy & Consulting, Strategic Marketing and Corporate Finance Summer School courses. In this article, learn more about the expert business and industry-led programme, and a fun range of extra-curricular activities.
Outside the classroom
Outside of the classroom, Summer School offered lots of opportunities for students to take advantage of studying in London with a range of extra-curricular activities. At London’s West End, students saw School of Rock and Wicked, visited the Harry Potter Studios, London’s famous backyard cinema, and went on a day trip to Brighton at the weekend.
Students across the Summer School suite also attended an information session to learn more about our suite of MSc programmes at Imperial College Business School.
Business Strategy & Consulting
Our Business Strategy & Consulting summer course exposes students to strategic solutions to problems commonly faced by organisations, whilst learning different approaches for managing consulting projects and clients.
A highlight of the Business Strategy & Consulting course was the academic excursion to Mercato Metropolitano, as part of studying this case study by Dr Paolo Taticchi. Students met and heard Andrea Rasca, Founder and Chief Executive Dreamer of Mercato Metropolitano, discuss its sustainable business model.
Students also heard from and networked with experts Jan Muhlfeit, former Chairman of Microsoft Europe, Richard Williams, Freelance Consultant, and Douglas Vair-Turnbull, Strategy Consultant at PwC London.
At the end of the course, students made their final consulting pitch to Dr Paolo Taticchi, Eric Cassells, Visiting Lecturer, and Mark Higham, General Manager of Process Automation, Siemens.
Business Strategy & Consulting student Eugenio Rubera described the final pitch project as a great opportunity to work “with people with such a diverse background and origin. It gave me the chance to experience even more the power of team working.”
The Strategic Marketing Summer School course gives students core skills in marketing and business strategy, whilst learning how to place those concepts within a global digital economy. Students learn how to deliver competitive advantage through strategic marketing and consider the role played digital technologies.
Students heard talks from industry leaders such as Dr John Bredican, an expert on mobile marketing, and Hel’s Angels, a brand engagement and live events agency with a passion for producing immersive consumer experiences. Students learnt core, expert skills on running campaigns across the marketing mix with a MIXPRO simulation, and put their new skills in use to pitch their consulting project to Academic Course Director Colin Love and Visiting Lecturer Stephen Humphrey.
For their academic excursion, students went on the Business of Wimbledon tour, where they learnt about the history of the Championships, the brand, the various revenue streams available to Wimbledon and future investments for the tournament.
Wai Kwan Luk summarises the course as “the GREATEST experience ever. The Strategic Marketing course is full of fun and excitement: unique content, brilliant instructors and a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Every day at Imperial was full of adventures, meeting interesting people, taking the challenging MIXPRO stimulation, and brainstorming discussions in class. I am so thankful I was a part of the Summer School at Imperial College Business School.”
Student Jad Rizkallah says, “The Summer School at Imperial offered me a great opportunity to study a range of interesting modules in one of the most dynamic, cosmopolitan and multicultural cities on the globe: London. I found that the group work was one of the most enriching parts of the experience, meeting people from different nationalities, academic and cultural backgrounds. Class discussions were a great opportunity to network and build connections with new friends from all over the world.”
With no doubt, my experience at Imperial’s Summer School is a positive enhancement on my CV when it comes to applying for internships – as well as a once in a lifetime experience!
Our Corporate Finance Summer School course trains students in understanding the capital cost of organisations. Students learn key concepts such as the capital structure of organisations, how financial decisions like buy-outs are made, how investment decisions can be optimised, business valuation, and the balance of debt and equity.
The highlight on the Corporate Finance course was the Academic Excursion. Students visited Canary Wharf for a walking tour, where they saw the headquarters of many multi-national banks including Barclays, Citigroup, J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley. The tour explored the regeneration of Canary Wharf form one of the busiest ports in the world to the largest centre for financial trading in Europe, and expose students to London’s world class hub of global commerce.
Outside of the classroom, students also heard from Shahin Iraninejad, alumnus of our MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering and Investment Banking Associate at Credit Suisse. Shahin shared details of his journey from graduation to now, his current role and organisation, achievements to date in the workplace, and shared advice that he would have benefited from before embarking on his career.
