What I love about Imperial is that there are always open lectures about EVERYTHING new in the world and as a student, you can gain access to all those brilliant minds through attending different talks.
I attended an open lecture organised by two students clubs (Imperial College Business School Finance Club and Imperial College Technology, Media & Telecommunication Club) about Bitcoin and Ethereum. The speaker, Owen Barnes, delivered an amazing speech, from conveying to us the concept of cryptocurrencies to his insightful view on how the future world will be shaped by Blockchain. He made a powerful speech about how we should protect our data and how freedom of trading should be a part of our human rights. After the lecture, we had an intellectual discussion about his view on the change of banking systems in the future since I am currently studying Economics.
This was the first time I seriously looked into the world of cryptocurrencies and Blockchain. I am truly intrigued by the concept of Blockchain and appreciated the imaginative mind of the creator who designed the whole system. I am particularly amazed by ICO which facilitates the funding of businesses in a way that I have never imagined. Because I am currently studying the Corporate Finance module and realised that nowadays, many start-ups and small businesses are struggling to gain funders for the business growth.
While being intrigued by the concept of cryptocurrencies, many questions popped up in my mind:
Are cryptocurrencies an abuse of financial system or a new freedom of trading?
Since there are maybe many restrictions in opening a bank account, will our future generation use cryptocurrencies instead of putting their money in a bank, the third party that people may cast doubts in?
Will Blockchain achieve the extreme version of decentralisation and be out of control of the Central Bank?
Governments from different countries have been trying to find ways to regulate the cryptocurrencies while investment banks take different perspectives in utilizing the cryptocurrencies like setting up trading desks for the digital currencies. As for me, it will be a good starting for me to look into the future world and start my dissertation of the master program!
