One of the most incredible things about Imperial College Business School is the sheer number of clubs and societies one can join. The abundance of career clubs in particular is demonstrative of the ambitious and self-starting nature of many of the School’s students. Recently, the Business School welcomed a much-needed addition: the Imperial College Business School Student Investment Fund. Founded in December 2017, the Imperial College Business School Student Investment Fund is the brainchild of several MSc Investment & Wealth Management, MSc Finance & Accounting and MSc Strategic Marketing students – Davide Sciuto, Jonathan Fielding, Atiba Jackson, Nicola Zanetti, Edoardo Pediconi, Jan Rinck & Katherine Tunaley. The Fund is the first of its kind in the College’s history, and aims to provide students with hands-on, practical experience in buy-side investment. Every aspect of the fund was designed with the focus of helping members become prime candidates for a career in the buy-side industry.
Our fund is the only student-led investment fund to operate both quantitative and fundamental strategies – something we are very proud of! We also work directly with start-ups and buy-side firms to provide our members with access to a solid industry network. In addition, we are working with several buy-side firms, such as Fidelity, to develop a comprehensive training programme to equip our analysts with the necessary practical skills and training to succeed as they transition into full-time employment in equity. Crucially, we are working closely with the Business School to involve alumni who have gone on to work in the industry. We plan to have our own alumni network too – once a member of the Student Investment Fund, always a member of the Student Investment Fund!
The Business School, central College and the Dean of the Business School, Professor Francisco Veloso, have been incredibly supportive of the initiative – so much so that the College Endowment has generously donated £100,000 in seed funding to invest. We understand that there is no substitute for practical experience, and that’s why we have developed this Fund. It has been designed as a complement to classroom learning and a chance to utilise the quantitative skills and innovative teaching that have become synonymous with the Imperial College Business School brand.
It’s not just us who are excited about this fantastic new initiative – in just two months, the Fund has amassed over 150 members from across the Business School. We are a diverse bunch – we are 25% female, represent over 25 different nationalities and are students from MSc and MBA programmes! It has been amazing to see just how hungry our fellow students are to learn the practical skills required for a successful career as an equity analyst. While we have concluded all recruitment for analysts this year, membership is still open and it’s free! If you would like to become a member of the Fund, please express your interest to us via email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
All members are invited to join us at the Fund’s official launch event. The event will include a brief address from Dean Veloso and an exciting panel discussion with speakers from BlackRock, Sandaire & Aviva Investros.
