While you might think that afternoon tea should be a straightforward affair, there are virtually endless nuances that can make it easy to stumble into a faux pas.

As part of British Summer Time Week, we’ve recruited leading etiquette institute, The English Manner, and its Director, William Hanson, to guide us through the entire process with his insightful Afternoon Tea Etiquette Masterclass.

William Hanson is one of the UK’s foremost etiquette coaches, described by the Financial Times as “special forces in the world of politeness”. This stellar reputation has seen him help a myriad of diplomats, business leaders and VIPs understand the subtleties of afternoon tea, ensuring they stand out for all the right reasons in high society.

For this virtual masterclass, you’ll be ushered through a ‘minefield of manners’ as Hanson sets about demystifying the rules of afternoon tea etiquette. Alongside a host of other fascinating tips, you’ll learn how to correctly pronounce ‘scone’, brew the perfect cup of English-style tea and grasp the proper procedure to elegantly clean up a spill. Plus, you’re welcome to ask any questions to a faux pas in the future.

This event is open to all of the Imperial College community, including prospective, admitted and current students, staff, and alumni.
