Inspiring Entrepreneurship at TALK.GLOBAL
Earlier this month, Professor Nelson Phillips, Abu Dhabi Chamber Chair in Innovation and Strategy, joined Peter Grainger, co-founder of CafePod at TALK.GLOBAL to discuss inspiring entrepreneurship as part of their Talking Heads series.
Nelson and Peter first met on the ELITE programme, co-run by Imperial College Business School and the London Stock Exchange. ELITE is a business support programme designed to help the UK’s most exciting and ambitious private companies prepare and structure for their next stage of growth. CafePod are certainly a great success story of the programme, having grown to be the UK’s 7th largest roast & ground coffee brand over the last seven years.
Nelson and Peter’s discussion centred on what big companies can learn from smaller companies. With technology changing the way consumers behave so rapidly, many larger, established brands are struggling to keep up. However, innovators and entrepreneurs, such as CafePod, are able to adapt, experiment and take risks to grow in this volatile market. Nelson noted that creating a culture of innovation involves three key aspects; customer centricity, risk taking and making experimentation the norm. He also discussed how risk appetite can affect businesses of all sizes, any why it’s not always a good thing for small businesses to strive to be like larger businesses.
