Many large, mature organisations because of their embedded structures, fail to get the full value from their most experienced and knowledgeable technical experts. Senior technical experts can become ‘victims of their own success’ – deployed as operational ‘fixers’ for their technical troubleshooting and advisory skills without the opportunity to contribute to the organisation’s longer-term success, for example by advising on future strategy or by coaching and mentoring rising talent.
As an organisation where excellent technical and large-scale project management is core, Total equally recognises that its technical leaders have other valuable contributions to make. The Senior Experts Programme was designed to give technical leaders the skills and confidence to:
- Contribute to strategic discussions about the choices and opportunities facing Total up to 20 years ahead
- Communicate influentially with senior stakeholders in these discussions
- Give coaching leadership to rising talent and future technical leaders within Total
- Create and continue a community of networked senior technical leaders within the business
Imperial College has a long tradition of conducting research for and collaborating with the energy sector. It understands the roles and career paths of technical experts within these organisations, and the strategic challenges facing the sector generally. We also have a long track record of developing leadership within technology-driven businesses.
Crucially, we have a network of global corporate partners– in energy and other sectors – who can demonstrate how they weave technical knowledge into the long-term development and culture of the whole business.
