To celebrate the arrival of Professor Francisco Veloso as Dean to Imperial College Business School last autumn, the School launched the largest scholarship available to Global Online MBA students, The Dean’s Excellence Award.
The award of £15,000 was awarded to three students, Ben Milligan, Veronica Jin and Seth Johnson, who each demonstrated exceptional academic and professional achievement and joined the programme in January 2018.
The three winners were chosen by a panel who were looking for applicants who evidenced ability and passion for meeting global challenges to make a positive difference as a socially responsible leader in today’s dynamic global business environment.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the award winners during their Induction Week on campus and listen to their international experiences first-hand,” said Professor Veloso.
The flexibility of the Global Online MBA allows our students to apply their learnings immediately to the work place and I am excited to witness how Ben, Veronica and Seth continue to develop their careers and make a significant social impact with the assistance of the programme and The Dean’s Excellence Award.”
Director of Admissions, Crystal Grant adds, “We were delighted to launch the award to celebrate the calibre and diversity of our Global Online MBA students. The three recipients come from very different backgrounds, but each of them impressed us with their academic and professional accomplishments, their drive and their incredible potential for future success on the programme and beyond.”
Here, we meet the three students who were awarded the scholarship:

“To have the Dean look at my career path and future prospects, and award me in such a way has given me a resolve, determination and confidence to take this challenge on. It’s a real honour to receive such an award, and it will have a real impact on my big plans for the future.
Imperial was an easy decisions for me – I needed an effective distance learning interface that gave me flexibility to learn whenever I could find the time and The Hub has delivered this. I found that it’s easier than the lectures I had as an undergraduate. I can pause, research side ideas, re-run any parts I misunderstood or misheard, and fully digest every point of learning using the text, the videos, or the interactive features. After my initial trial of The Hub, I knew it could deliver the learning I required.”
Job Title: Senior Financial Analyst
Veronica is a Senior Financial Analyst at BlackRock, a leading asset management firm specialising in investment management. Equipped with strong knowledge and experience on the impact of technology in business, she has a keen interest for the business side of the technology industry having previously driven and managed projects related to technology innovation initiatives in finance in Silicon Valley.
With the help of the Global Online MBA, Veronica would like to accelerate her career path, secure a management position and reinvest her time via corporate mentorship programmes.
“I am absolutely delighted to have received The Dean’s Excellence Award. It is an honour to be a recipient of this special award and I look forward to representing Imperial College Business School as an ambassador for the Global Online MBA.
Imperial is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The Global Online MBA programme provides an excellent opportunity to gain business knowledge and devlop skills in a strong technology-focused environment. The flexibility of the programme allows me to apply concepts learned, to the business world, in real-time. I am excited for the opportunities and networks being a student at Imperial will bring, and I am confident that I will be better prepared for future career growth.”
Job Title: Business Development Engineer
Since graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Seth sought employment back in Africa where he could train local engineers. Growing up on the rural savannah northern Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa, Seth coordinated donors to sustain literacy, agriculture and medical programmes during the civil war, and went on to manage the construction of a local hospital on behalf of US-based NGO.
Currently the Business Development Engineer for TechnipFMC in Ghana, a company that specialises in oil and gas projects, technologies, systems and services, Seth has dedicated the last 10 years of his life making a significant social impact on the African community. He hopes an Imperial MBA will equip him with the necessary skills to continue this journey.
“It’s a tremendous honour for an institution like Imperial to acknowledge my efforts to date and to affirm their belief that the best is yet to come. On a practical level, this support allows me to truly challenge myself and unlock my full potential by studying here at Imperial. I also find it significant that social impact was a key criterion for the award – a clear demonstration of the values here at Imperial and another reason I’m proud to be associated with it.
The main reason I chose Imperial was the breadth of experience and insight I knew I would find among my classmates, which is very important when learning and working in syndicates. Also, I have a technical background in a technology-driven sector, and I trusted Imperial to connect with that from a business standpoint. I think employers recognise that Imperial graduates have the tools to be successful anywhere, and I wanted that to be true of me as well.”
