Current health system resources are not sufficient to cope with rising demand from obesity, ageing and other pressures. As technology develops, healthcare infrastructure must become simpler, smaller, cheaper and more distributed. Developed countries need to focus on shifting care from expensive hospitals to local communities. Developing countries can leapfrog the outdated models from the 20th century and show us the way forward.
