My career in tech

I have spent 12 years working in the technology space after graduating with a Business Management degree. Since graduating I have worked for a range of international tech companies including Hewlett Packard, Box, Microsoft and I now run the Enterprise G-Suite business at Google Cloud UK.

The Global Online MBA: an opportunity to develop skills and rise to senior leadership

Before applying to the Global Online MBA, I was looking at the next stage in my career, I wanted to equip myself with a more rounded skillset, including more financial and management skills. I  noticed that most senior leaders had an MBA so it was something I had always wanted to do, but never thought I could find the time to do so. I chose Imperial as it is a globally respected university with sought after teachers and resources. I also searched specifically for the top globally recognised MBAs and Imperial is in the top 10, and number one online MBA programme in the UK.

The benefits of an online programme

The only way I could undertake an MBA was online as I wasn’t in a position where I could take 12 months off work. The Global Online MBA meant I could continue to work while studying. The online learning platform, The Hub, is an easy and intuitive platform to use. Due to the current climate, we have had to take our exams online too and the remote exam tool has been simple to use.

Working on weak spots

My knowledge weak spot is Finance and Accounting, however, the first two finance modules on the programme have really helped me cement what I learned 12 years ago at university and expanded my knowledge with new, detailed topics.

My favourite module so far has been Strategy. I love looking into particular elements of strategy and realising why certain decisions are made, including those at well-known institutions that we have analysed in case studies.

Learning from my peers

Group work has been my favourite part of the programme. My syndicate group work well as a team, each bringing their own set of skills. In some projects, specific people have taken the lead based on their experience and others support, vice versa. I have learned a lot from each person in the team and I have a very varied group including a business IT consultant, an investment banker, a CMO from a law firm and a doctor who works at a well-known pharmaceutical company. Extending beyond my syndicate group, my cohort is very global and are in hugely varied professions which is fantastic.

The importance of time management

Balancing the Global Online MBA has been difficult at times, particularly around the end of term exams, while also doing coursework and balancing a full-time job and family. It’s been crucial for me to organise my time properly.

My future goals

My main goal is to move into senior management and leadership in the next 5-10 years, so having the Global Online MBA under my belt will definitely help with achieving that target.

Advice to future Global Online MBA students

My advice to prospective Global Online MBA students is to speak to someone who has done the programme, like a Student Ambassador, to ensure you are ready for the time commitment.
