Experience

What was your professional background before commencing your Global Online MBA?

When I began my Global Online MBA I was employed as Professor and Director of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research, and Deputy Dean of Graduate Research at James Cook University. I have been a nurse for 31 years, about half of which was as a clinician and half as an academic. In my clinical life I held a variety of leadership roles including managing a large community health team and policy advisor.

What are your greatest academic, professional or personal achievements?

I consider myself to be an academic ‘all-rounder’ who has achieved well in each of the domains of research, learning and teaching, and service. My most rewarding achievements are those connected to making a difference to the lives of others. My focus on translational, action based research has resulted in the implementation of many changes in models of primary health care delivery that improve patient care, which I’m very proud of.

What was the appeal of an online MBA and why at Imperial College Business School?

I was at a point in my career where I needed to choose where to go next: should I stay in research, or could I move into a senior administrative role in the tertiary sector? I firmly believe if you aspire to lead and manage a large section of a university you need to know more than what you might have picked up through experience alone. I attended an executive education residential that gave me the confidence to apply for a place on Imperial’s Global Online MBA. Because of my work, I wanted to study online so I could fit this activity in to my already full schedule.

What has been the most rewarding part of the programme?

The curriculum is designed to promote the application of theory to your own workplace.

Flexibility

What advice would you give on balancing study with other commitments?

You need to find a couple of hours a day and one day of the weekend to meet the study commitments. Have a conversation with your significant others about the impact on your time before you begin so everyone is on board.

What are the best aspects of the flexible format and online study experience?

Being able to fit your study into your work schedule.

How does The Hub online learning platform work for you?

The Hub is a very easy platform to use. The discussion threads are full of useful hints and tips, and group communication is facilitated by the messaging system.

How would you describe your cohort at Imperial?

They’re an eclectic group. A mix of poets and quants from all walks of life.
