Choosing to Study the MSc International Health Management at Imperial College Business School
After completing my BSc which was mainly focused on research, I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in another field. I have always been interested in management, thus my ideal job was in an industry that combined both science and business. For this reason, after completing a one year internship in a pharmaceutical company, I decided to undertake an MSc in business to acquire the managerial knowledge I lacked to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. After carrying out extensive research I decided the MSc International Health Management was the best option to obtain my ideal job. I chose Imperial College Business School for its reputation and world-leading education, its location in an international city, and their amazing career service.
The MSc International Health Management Programme Experience
This year has been even better than I expected. Academically, I am very much enjoying all of the courses and the professors. The academics all have a lot of experience in healthcare and management fields, and attending their lectures is a great opportunity to interact with them and get some personal insight into the content.
I really enjoy the structure of the programme. We study general management courses in the first term, apply these to healthcare in the second term, and use all this knowledge in several practical projects through the summer term. I believe this is a formula that challenges the student from the beginning till the end of the course.
Personally, having met lovely people from all over the world has made my experience better. Apart from getting to know individuals from five continents and learning about their different countries, cultures and backgrounds, I have made some life-lasting friends. There are so many different nationalities amongst our class that I have been able to meet people from all around the world. Because we have a smaller class size, we have gotten to know each other very well and made very good friendships. The students also have a wide variety of degree backgrounds, either quantitative or qualitative, and have different career plans and motivations, which has also allowed me to grow academically and personally.
I chose Imperial College Business School for its reputation and world-leading education, its location in an international city, and their amazing career service.
Life at the Business School
The Business School offers a wide range of events and seminars to help us learn about various careers opportunities and companies, improve your soft skills or get tips about recruitment processes. Personally, I found the consulting events very useful, because they helped me to consider consulting as a potential career and interact with professionals from important companies within this field. I have also been assisted to improve my CV, cover letter, and interview skills.
I am the Vice-President of the Biopharma & Healthcare club. I decided to join the club in order to get a greater exposure to the Imperial College network, specifically the pharmaceutical & healthcare sector. I am also a Student Ambassador at the Business School. I have attended open days and information sessions, where I have shared my experience as a current MSc student with prospective students. I am also a member of the Consultancy Society. I joined this to learn more about this career path, network with professionals within this field and become familiar with the tough selection process.
The community is very open and helpful. My peers, academics and support staff are always there when you need them.
Life in London
This is the second year that I have enjoyed living in London. You will never get bored here. I particularly enjoy the atmosphere of this city, including its markets, parks and trendy people. Something that I will never forget is how everyone in London spends time outdoors when the sun is out. The London nightlife is something to highlight as well. It offers an infinite number of bars and pubs, as well as some of the most recognized clubs in Europe. Also, the fact that almost everyone in the course is from abroad gives you the possibility to discover London in good company.
Future goals and the Career and Professional Development Service
The Careers Service is definitely one of my best surprises from this programme. They provide you with as many one-to-one career sessions as you want, and they help you from the very beginning of the programme until you have found employment. They also provide you with advice about the various career possibilities, and encourage and help you to achieve the job you always dreamt of. Some of their services that I have used the most include CV and cover letter support, as well as mock interview practice.
I would like to obtain a managerial position in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company. Ideally, I would like to work as a product manager in a strategic marketing department. Getting a job in a healthcare consulting company would also be great, which would allow me to learn from a wide range of companies in the healthcare sector.
