Why did you choose to study MSc Risk Management and Financial Engineering and why specifically at Imperial College Business School?

As a finance and risk management professional, I was looking for a programme to advance my technical and career development. Imperial College Business School is renowned worldwide for its reputation as a centre of excellence in finance, whilst having a commercial and practical edge.

The MSc Risk Management and Financial Engineering is a highly quantitative and technical postgraduate programme. The targeted and practical curriculum appealed to me as an industry practitioner aiming to combine both workplace experiences with classroom knowledge. Having explored various courses offered by other schools, I believed this programme was best suited to meet my personal development and career objectives.

What advice would you give to a prospective student considering studying the same Business School programme as you?

The MSc Risk Management and Financial Engineering programme provides a comprehensive and rigorous understanding and foundation in financial engineering and risk management principles. However, in order to appreciate and fully benefit from what the programme has to offer, I advise potential students to actively seek opportunities to apply textbook theories into practice where possible. From my experience, the dissertation provided the perfect platform for me to consolidate my technical knowledge and find solutions to practical challenges faced at work.

How has the Business School helped develop your career?

I head up a quantitative valuations function within an investment bank. Completing the highly technical and rigorous MSc programme has helped equip me with the quantitative skill sets to effectively lead and manage my team.

How did you benefit from the services provided by the Business School’s Career and Professional Development Services Team?

Through the help of the Career and Professional Development Services Team, I was able to tap in to the talent pool of recent graduates from the MSc programmes. This led to the successful recruitment and placement of outstanding valuation specialists which have gone on to work successfully in my team.

How do you stay connected with others from your Business School alumni network?

Given the vast international network I have forged through the Business School, electronic communications such as emails and social networking sites are the most efficient ways for me to stay in touch with fellow members of the alumni network.

In what way is remaining connected to your alumni network important to you? / What value do you get out of your Business School and alumni connections?

The Business School’s alumni community is the perfect network for staying connected with like-minded individuals and professionals. Besides having the opportunity to discuss industry and professional developments with my former course mates, I also draw upon the wealth of the alumni network when I look to build and recruit new talented individuals to join my company.
