Studying MSc Strategic Marketing
Why did you choose to study MSc Strategic Marketing and why specifically at Imperial College Business School?
The Strategic Marketing programme at Imperial College Business School offered a unique approach to teaching with a focus on the new technologies and innovation that impact most industries. With a personal interest in big data and analytics, this course helped me understand the various opportunities and challenges new e-businesses have to face. In addition, doing the course provided me with the opportunity to work with like-minded people and meet some industry leaders during the year.
What was the most important thing/learning point you took with you from the Business School?
The course made me realise the importance and the need to understand how big data companies operate and the importance of developing analytical skills early on. Through the various practical projects, I was able to acquire some of those skills which I would then be able to use in my interviews and current role.
What was the most surprising thing about the programme?
I was quite surprised by the type of projects we were asked to work on. All projects were real-life examples in which our work could have a direct impact on a company or a group of people. These real-life situations helped prepare us for our future roles.
How do you view your experience of studying at Imperial College Business School since you left?
Looking back at my experience, I am thrilled to have worked with so many different people from various background during our group projects. This clearly helped in my first year in an multi-national.
Career & professional development
How has the Business School helped develop your career?
The Strategic Marketing course helped me understand how traditional marketing was impacted by the digital age and where the biggest opportunities were for young graduates like me. Following the course, I was able to shift my interest from traditional marketing companies to larger e-businesses who were innovating and bringing new technologies to the market.
What did you take away from your learning experience that has been most applicable to your current role?
Through the various group exercises, I was able to understand how to effectively conduct group project work and manage my time and other group members effectively. In my current role, I spend most of my days in meetings and I am able to conduct those meeting in an effective way thanks to my time at Imperial College Business School.
What is your current role like?
Having started at Amazon as a Sales Associate in our marketplace department, I was able to gain valuable sales skills in my first 2 years by creating relationship with Amazon sellers and supporting their businesses growth. I am currently still in Amazon Marketplace, leading a team of Sales Associates with the objective to support Amazon sellers international growth. The role requires strong people management skills as I am responsible for my team’s development, but also strong analytical skills to understand this fast growing businesses and challenges we are yet to face.
What do you enjoy most about your work and what are the main challenges that you face?
The most enjoyable aspect of working for Amazon is the people. Amazon employs strong talents from various backgrounds but with the same will to innovate and work at a fast pace. This is required by the fast-moving environment Amazon creates on a daily basis. There is no such thing as a ‘daily routine’ at Amazon, every day brings new challenges and opportunities that requires a flexibility and strong work ethic.
What is your proudest achievement in the job so far?
I was very lucky to be part of Amazon very first Prime Day in 2015. This 1-day deal event required a lot of planning and organisation with our partners to make sure we were bringing the best experience to our customers. Even 8 months after joining Amazon, I was given high responsibilities in the preparation of that event and was able to meet some senior members of our teams.
The alumni network
In what way is remaining connected to your alumni network important to you?
Following my time at the Business School, it is important for me to stay close to the other students from my cohort as everyone will take a unique path in life and will gain valuable experiences that can be shared with others.
Have you volunteered at the Business School since you graduated and why do you feel it is important?
Every year, I try to attend Imperial College Business School events to share my experience with students, either through recruitment events or alumni talks. I believe it is important to stay connected with new students to understand the various motivations of each to learn about E-Commerce.
Advice for future students
What advice would you give to a prospective student considering studying the same Business School programme as you?
My advice to prospect students would be to start the programme with a clear objective in mind (career, skillset etc). In addition to the great content of the programme, you will also have the chance to meet a lot of inspiring individuals such as fellow students, lecturer and guest speakers. Make sure to take advantage of those opportunities!
