Academic and industry experience before Imperial

What work experience/internships did you have before beginning with Imperial College Business School?

I did several internships ranging from communication and events management to international marketing. The most exciting experience was a six-month internship at L’Oréal after my Bachelor’s degree.

Studying MSc Strategic Marketing

Why did you decide to study an MSc in Strategic Marketing and why specifically at Imperial College Business School?

Before starting a professional career in Marketing, I wished to get some in depth knowledge in various fields in Marketing to get a real 360-degree perspective of the topic. However, I did not want a Master’s that purely focuses on the theory, but where I can apply my knowledge to practice in a setting that allows me to think outside the box, work within diverse teams and challenges me daily.

What makes the MSc Strategic Marketing at Imperial College Business School unique?

After completing this programme, you will feel ready and confident to enter the professional world, as every single module prepares you for the practical issues you will have to solve in real live, whether this is content related or working within teams.

What aspects of the programme do you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?

In the summer term we got the chance to work with a company and address real business issues. It was rewarding to see how the six months before prepared me to be able to work in such a professional setting, be confident with the ideas. I now present and work more effectively within teams because of it.

What has been the most challenging part of the programme?

Working within teams. We come from all places around the world and sometimes this leads to culture clashes. But it is amazing to see how much you can learn from each other and see people develop within your team.

Which has been your favourite module so far and why?

Digital Marketing. Before starting the module, I had no experience whatsoever in Digital Marketing and I was sure this would be my least favourite module. However, I loved it. I felt I learned so many valuable things, from analytics to content creation that will be a real value in my future career.

Guest speakers

Which seminars, events or guest lectures at the school have been useful in developing your skills and knowledge?

There is a wide range of seminars, events and lectures and I recommend to go you go to as many as possible. It is always a good networking opportunity as well as developing your knowledge in topics that are not covered in your programme. For example, I attended events on Brexit Negotiations and the Refugee Crisis.

The faculty

Did you have a favourite professor/lecturer and why?

Andreas. He teaches with such a passion and enthusiasm that his lectures are always interesting and entertaining. He encourages you to think differently, which is something I really value.

Your cohort

Imperial places a large emphasis on group work, what did you like the most about working in this type of environment?

Working with people makes the environment more sociable. You get to know and get closer to people in the programme quicker. Also, you understand yourself better and how you operate within teams, making yourself more confident.

How would you describe your cohort at Imperial?

I am so impressed by the people I have met at Imperial. Everyone is clever, hard working and really nice. They become more than just colleagues, they become like a family.

Opportunities from studying at Imperial

What has been the greatest opportunity you have had at Imperial that you wouldn’t get anywhere else?

The whole experience: studying in London at one of the top universities in the world and being surrounded by people from all around the world. The connections I made there, whether they are with my classmates or the businesses that came to present at Imperial, was irreplaceable.  

Career goals and jobs

How have you benefited from the services provided by Careers?

I did my first assessment centre while I was at Imperial. Careers organised a mock assessment centre specifically catered to the company where I was doing the assessment day. This helped me acquire an understanding of the questions that might be asked and also took away some of the nervousness. Also, I constantly had 20 min sessions with consultants from the career centre to review my CV and cover letters, which was really helpful. I would definitely recommend making use of that service.

Have you received any job offers since commencing your programme?

The Nike Internship scheme. I met the HR team at a recruiting event at Imperial and we exchanged email addresses. When I sent my application I emailed the HR director and she viewed my application. I subsequently received an invitation to various interviews and got an offer to work as a Brand Retail Management Intern, which I happily accepted.

Life as a student in London

What can a weekend in London look like for an MSc student?

Even though we work a lot during the week, the weekend is usually free. We go out to bars, house parties and food markets. Rarely before an important deadline we would meet on the weekend to go through a presentation.

If you had to move to London for the programme, what have been the benefits and challenges of moving to London? What advice would you give to someone in a similar position?

London has everything to offer that your heart might desire. It is an amazing city, but it can get hectic from time to time, especially if you have to commute a long way. I would therefore recommend to live as central as possible, where you can either commute by bike (what I have been doing) or have a short tube or bus ride.

Advice for future students

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for the programme?

Do some research about the programme and make sure you understand what is expected of you. You can contact alumni or attend information sessions.
