Tell us what your greatest academic, professional or personal awards/achievements have been.

As a young professional with experience in Public Relations and Marketing I already have had the chance to work in different sectors, from space and defence to pharmaceutical and consulting.

During my studies at university, I focused mainly on Strategy, Innovation and East Asian markets dynamics. I studied Chinese culture and language at La Sapienza University of Rome, Marketing and Communications at the European Institute of Design and then I earned a Master’s Degree in General Management at Luiss Business School. I am very passionate about science and technology and last year I won the Data Girls competition, a challenge based on Big Data Management and part of a Luiss University project for the professional development of female talents in business. With other classmates I also founded a start-up which provides a service based on block chain technology, aiming at fighting the counterfeit of luxury and pharmaceutical goods; our idea was among the top five finalists at the Mark Challenge, an international business plan competition organised by the International University of Monaco.

Why did you decide to study your Summer School course and why specifically did you choose to study with Imperial College Business School?

I think that to be a successful marketing professional it is crucial to be constantly updating your knowledge, in order to anticipate trends and better understand complex dynamics which could influence strategy and performance. The rise of new technologies, globalisation and social changes constitute opportunities and challenges which require appropriate knowledge and tools to be managed at best. Imperial College has a strong international reputation as a top world university for academic excellence, research and innovation and I have had no doubt when I made my choice that no place would be better to acquire the most innovative perspective about marketing strategy.


What makes your Summer School unique?

All the Professors are very able to engage students, stimulating discussion and critical thinking. Even if I am a marketing professional, I acquired a large amount of new skills and knowledge, thanks also to the different experiences exposed by other classmates. I also appreciate the quality of the lectures’ materials available in the hub. But the real value added of the summer school was the unique chance to be immersed in a very international environment.

What aspects of the course did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed very much the workshops (as well as all the “learning by doing” activities) and the academic excursions. But also the lectures about neuro marketing, which I consider a very interesting field of study.

What was the most challenging part of the course?

Beyond a doubt it was the business strategy simulation. It was challenging because you have to solve a business case in a real market scenario simulated by a software; all your choices were elaborated and they result in a score. It was a very concrete way to learn, a real training for strategic thinking. You have to face your mistakes, adapt your strategy or change it completely, take risks or play safe, it is up to you (but you have to face the consequences, of course, just like in the real world!). A very good way to learn how to make good business decision in real life.


Imperial places a large emphasis on group work, what inspires you the most about working in this type of environment?

I think that group work, especially if carried out in an international environment, is one the most treasured experience a professional or a student could have. There is always something to learn by your colleagues! Group work at Imperial was a good exercise for emotional intelligence and listening, improving your project management and leadership skills. As the class is really international, it is great for your cross cultural management skills too.

How would you describe your Summer School class?

Intensive and engaging, with extensive space for discussion.

What parts of the social programme did you most enjoy?

All the occasions were great and well organised in terms of entertainment. Not only there are scheduled activities such as trips and cultural events but the ambassadors make a great work to organise a lot of different occasions which allow you to better know your classmates, from visits to London markets to cricket game sessions in Hyde Park.


What has been the greatest opportunity during your summer at Imperial that you don’t think you would get anywhere else?

The opportunity to be immersed in the environment of a prestigious, top ranked university, with a scientific and rigorous approach. As the link between business and science/technology is becoming more and more important, it was very inspiring to explore and live in a campus where innovation and research is everywhere. If like me you are a very science-minded person, Imperial is the right place for you!

What are your future career goals and how do you think your time at Imperial will help/has helped?

My willingness is to constantly grow as a marketing and business professional and to be involved in more and more challenging and exciting projects, making a positive impact. I consider the skills in digital marketing, branding, neuro-marketing and consumer behaviour acquired during the programme as very precious for my future projects.


Whereabouts did you stay in London and why did you choose to stay there?

 I decided to rent an apartment in South Kensington, close to Hyde Park. I love to experience the atmosphere of the place I visit and for me this was a great way to get in the London mood.

What can a weekend in London look like for a Summer School student?

A week end in London could be…whatever you want! London offers a lot of different experiences, it is simply impossible to get bored. If you like cultural activities, you may visit museums or galleries (I personally recommend you the British museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum). If you love nature you may relax in a park, having a picnic near the lake or playing sports. If you love shopping, you should go take a look at the famous Harrods department store or you could spend an afternoon shopping around Oxford Street. In the evening, you could enjoy a dinner on a rooftop or skyscraper restaurant or you could visit a traditional pub. And of course you could join one of the social program activities or trips organised by Imperial.

In your opinion, tell us about the most exciting thing you’ve done in London.

I was really impressed visiting the Kyoto garden. It is definitely one of the most beautiful Zen garden I have ever seen, a gem hidden in the heart of Holland Park. There is a waterfall, a small lake with carpes and magnificent peacocks and herons walking and flying freely in the area. Simply stunning!


What advice would you give someone who was thinking about applying for the Summer School?

To apply for sure. If you are curios and motivated and you would love to spend a summer in the stimulating environment of a top ranked university, Imperial is a great choice. I improved my skills and made friends from all over the world.

Don’t be shy and take the risk! Time flies at summer school, so I suggest you raise your hand and participate in the discussion in class from the very beginning. The summer school is so much more enjoyable if you join the debate! And the atmosphere is always friendly and respectful, so don’t be afraid to share your ideas.
