The Summer School experience

Why did you decide to study your Summer School course and why did you choose to study with Imperial College Business School?
When deciding what to do with my summer I was looking at different Summer Schools in the UK. Imperial College was my first option as I want to do a Master’s in Business, however, I did not know if it was the right thing for me. The curriculum was very complete and provided me with an overview of what the business world looks like and also the University is one of the top in the field with outstanding Professors.

What made your Summer School experience unique?
The Summer School is very intense and dynamic. The highlight of the course for me was the engagement we have with real life entrepreneurs. The opportunity to transform our own ideas into reality with help from professionals. Excellent mentoring throughout the course and the ability to challenge us every day.

What aspects of the course do you most enjoy?
Throughout the course I was able to meet many academics and professionals from the business world. I was able to enhance my network by meeting people from the field and asking them about my ideas, and they always provided me with feedback to help me grow on a professional level.

What is the most challenging part of the course?
On the course we had to come up with a business idea for our final project. This was certainly challenging as the time was limited and we had to work in groups. It helped to perfect my team-work skills and also creativity skills under pressure.

What is the most rewarding part of the course?
Learning from the best in the field is definitely the most rewarding part of the course. We had so many guest lectures which were very inspiring. We were able to have direct contact with them, for example, meeting the MD for Facebook for the UK and Ireland.

Imperial places a large emphasis on group work. What inspires you the most about working in this type of environment?
Working in teams is something you cannot learn in a classroom, but is a dynamic way of learning which this course gave me the opportunity to experience. Also, everyone in my team is from different countries, with different perspectives of the business world, making this a unique opportunity.

A wealth of opportunities

What has been the greatest opportunity during your summer at Imperial that you don’t think you would get anywhere else?
Apart from the normal curriculum, throughout the course we had the opportunity to participate in different meetings and activities related to the business world in London. I was able to attend to a meeting with Entrepreneur First where I met wonderful and inspiring entrepreneurs. Also, we did a tour around TechCity in Shoreditch, we visited different co-working spaces and met entrepreneurs conducting their daily business. This was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

What are your future career goals and how do you think your time at Imperial will help you achieve these?
The Summer School helped me guide what my future professional life will look like. Before coming to the course I did not know if I wanted to do something related to law, however, after the course I learnt that being an entrepreneur does not necessarily mean I need to study business. I now want to start my own business and the course helped me to know where to start.

Living in London

What can a weekend in London look like for a Summer School student?
Summer School helped me to make many friends from all around the world. They organised different socials around the city like going to the Harry Potter Studios, going to musicals or even a day trip to Oxford.

What is the most exciting thing you’ve done in London?
London is a city where there is always something going on. From musicals to presentations, I have had the opportunity to go to many musicals and open mic as I enjoy the music scene. Also, in relation to business, there are many entrepreneur meetings always going on which are free to attendant and where I had the opportunity to exchange ideas in relation to my future goals.

As an international student, what are the highlights to staying in London?
I am an international student and London is perfect for me. You will meet people from all around the world and even though England has its own culture, London is multicultural. From the international supermarkets to multiple religions, London is a place that I can call my second home.

Advice for future students

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for the Summer School?
My best advice would be to give it a shot! It would definitely be worth it. You will learn from the best in the field, you will be challenged and your views will change. You will find out that you could also become and entrepreneur and London is the perfect city to start making all your goals a reality.
