New Venture Tie Formation Across CVC and Alliance Networks

Birds eye view of a networking eventResearch Team: Anu Wadhwa  and Cory Phelps

Social network research typically considers only one type of relationship and thus only one type of network, thereby ignoring the multiplex nature of relationships that connect actors. This study examines the origins of interorganizational multiplexity by exploring the conditions under which the presence of a tie between two organisations in one network affects the likelihood of their forming a tie in another network. Building on real options research and our field work, we investigate this question by examining whether and when a corporate venture capital CVC relationship between an incumbent and a new venture leads them to form a strategic alliance with each other.
