Sam MacAulay and Andrew Davies were invited by the Dutch Highways Agency – Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment – to present results from their research on Crossrail. They then led a discussion held in the RWS head office in Utrecht about the challenges of implementing an innovation strategy for the Crossrail project. The workshop included 12 senior managers in the RWS, ProRail and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs SSD
David Gann, Andy Davies and Sam MacAulay contribute to Crossrail Innovation Strategy as a result of our research experience in mega-project management. SSD
Professor Erkko Autio is part of a consortium that won the Enterprise Research Centre announced in The Financial Times,  Times Higher and Guardian DI
Dr Julien Jourdan has won the HEC Foundation Best Dissertation Award and has been shortlisted for  2012 Industry Studies Association Dissertation Award BM
Dr Anne ter Wal has won a ESRC Future Leaders grant to study the network management strategies of innovators. The project is entitled Strategic Networking. ODI
Dr Jan-Michael Ross has won the Swabian Industry’s Scientific Prize 2012 for his dissertation entitled: Timing the Start of New Product Development and New Product Launch – Determinants and Performance Effects of Material-Substitution Decisions BM
Professor David Gann hosted Vince Cable to launch the government’s industry strategy. All
Many members of the Centre presented papers at the Academy of Management (AoM) 2012 conference in Boston including Ammon Salter, Gerry George, Markus Perkmann, Erkko Autio, Paola Criscuolo, Anne ter Wal, Sam MacAulay, Jan Ross and Dmitry Sharapov. All
Recent publications include How to Create Productive Partnerships with Universities in MIT Sloan Management Review and Crossing the Rubicon: Exploring the Factors that Shape Academics’ Perceptions of the Barriers to Working with Industry in Cambridge Journal Of Economics. ODI / BM
We welcomed the Sustainable Society Network+ to Imperial, headed by Catherine Mulligan as part of the Digital Economy Lab to investigate the value of ICT in developing sustainable solutions to resource protection. DI
We ran the Open Innovation: New Insights and Evidence Conference in June 2012 to develop papers for a Special Issue of Research Policy, guest edited by Ammon Salter. The conference united the world’s leading open innovation scholars including Henry Chesbrough, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his seminal book which helped to establish the field. Podcasts from this event with the Guest Editors are now available ODI
Dr Julien Jourdan was shortlisted for the dissertation prizes at the EGOS and AOM conferences 2012  BM
Sam MacAulay won the Best Paper Award at the Knowledge and Learning Conference, University of Edinburgh Business School in March 2012. His paper is entitled ‘The Search Environment is Not Benign: The Surprising Truth about Everyday Social Action and the Trajectory of Intra-Organizational Search’. Dr Andrew Davies presented research from the Olympics project at the Association of Project Managers Learning Legacy Launch Debate in January 2012. Dr Davies spoke alongside the CEO of the Olympic Delivery Authority and the Directors of Mace and Balfour Beatty  SSD
Dr Andrew Davies has published a report on the construction of the Olympic park with Co-author Ian Mackenzie. This work was published as part of the ODA’s Learning Legacy programme.  SSD
We launched the 2012 version of GEDI was launched at the V&A with David Willetts giving an opening speech on entrepreneurial Britain. The event attracted around 50 people from business, economics and policy communities. The launch of the index also resulted in substantial media coverage both in the UK and internationally.  DI
Our work was extensively cited in the Government’s Innovation & Research Strategy for Growth and the accompanying Economics paper published in December 2011. I&E Senior Research Fellow Keith Smith on secondment to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills as Head of Innovation Analysis discusses his role here. The Economics paper also acknowledges the contribution of the UK~IRC Innovation Policy Seminar in uniting leading innovation researchers with members of the BIS strategy team  ODI
P rofessor Erkko Autio won the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) Best Reviewer Award 2011 and 2012 DI
This year, our research in Open & Distributed Innovation has been published inResearch PolicyCalifornia Management Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and the Cambridge Journal of Economic Studies. We also showcased our work in numerous public events at IBM Hursley, Global Economic Symposium in Keil, Technical University of Munich, Aarhus University, University of Maastricht, the International Network for Social Network Analysis Sunbelt conference and both DRUID Conferences in 2012 as well at the Academy of Management Conference in August 2012.  ODI
In the last year our work in Business Model Innovation has been published in numerous journals including Research Policy, R&D Management and the Journal of Technology Transfer and has been widely disseminated at numerous international conferences recently including the Academy of Management, DRUID, Alberta School of Business conference on ‘Organizing Institutions’ and EGOS.  BM
We continued our participation in the High Level Panel on the Measurement of Innovation for the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, helping to develop a new innovation indicator to realise the EU’s Innovation Union in 2020. This work has resulted in two official reports co-authored by Professor Salter entitled ‘Indicators for Structural Change’, and ‘Indicators for Research Excellence’.  ODI
A special issue of Project-Based Organizations and Strategic Management Journal has been produced based on work from this theme and three symposia which we ran at AOM conferences  SSD
Two new research centres have been launched. The Digital City Exchange began in October 2011 with a 5-year remit to explore sustainable digital technologies. The Future Cities Centre is a 3-year project with Cisco and UCL to collaborate with businesses, entrepreneurs and start-ups in Tech City, East London  SSD
Since the Global Entrepreneurship Development Index was launched in 2011, an interactive maphas been developed and a suite of research pages to facilitate its wider dissemination. The tool, co-developed by Professor Erkko Autio, is widely used to determine international policy development an d has featured in the international media  DI
