Driving innovation at IBM
By engaging with IBM through EPSRC-funded research carried out in the Innovation Studies Centre (ISC), consulting and Executive Education, we’ve helped to change the way senior technologists are structured and positioned within the organisation. As IBM shifted its business focus from being a product-driven business to supplying IT services, our research addressed resultant issues around market requirements and IBM’s technological capacity. A research paper from this work has recently been published in the Strategic Management Journal entitled – ‘One Foot in One Foot Out: How Does Individuals’ External Search Breadth Affect Innovation Outcomes,’ co-authored by David Gann and Linus Dahlander.
In the video below Professor David Gann and Dr Ian MacKenzie discuss their research and how findings have enhanced IBM’s capability to foster radical, client-centric innovation, sharing knowledge across institutional boundaries and promoting mutual innovation opportunities.
