“Silence is essential. We need silence, just as much as we need air, just as much as plants need light. If our minds are crowded with words and thoughts, there is no space for us.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk and peace activist.
“…silence makes us whole if we let it. Silence helps draw together the scattered and dissipated energies of a fragmented existence.” Thomas Merton, Christian monk and writer.
In hosting ‘Exploring Silence’ I am drawing on my own experiences of silence in daily life and on retreat. I am inspired by the contemplatives in my own Christian heritage, as well as the non-religious mindfulness meditation and from the things I have learned my Buddhist colleagues.
‘Exploring Silence’ follows on from our Christian-Zen Day retreats and from a previous group ‘Silent RCA’ where students and staff came together to meditation, prayer, ponder or sit quietly together.
Each week there is a suggested theme and twenty minutes for personal silence. You are free to use this silent time in your own way. The sessions start 08:30 and finish at 08:55 UK time.
Where will exploring silence lead you?
