EDI Mission Statement

Within the Department of Chemistry, we want to create an environment where everyone feels able to bring their whole selves to work and to study every day. We are proud of the existing diversity within our staff and student body and recognise that improving this further can only serve to increase the quality and impact of our research and teaching. In recognition of the great strides we have made with respect to embedding Equality, Diversion and Inclusion at the heart of our culture our Athena Swan Gold award was renewed in 2019. We are mindful however that this does not represent a time for complacency, and that there is always more we can do to reduce the barriers faced by underrepresented groups.

We are therefore committed to further increasing our efforts to strive for a transparent and community-driven approach to deliver change within our department and remain open to challenge on our approach and we recognise that we will not always get things right first time. Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee are committed to implementing the ambitious programme of actions set out in our Athena Swan Gold renewal application and to work beyond this to improve our working and teaching environment. We believe that creating a more equitable and inclusive setting will not only serve to reduce the barriers faced by under-represented groups but will also benefit everyone across the department.
